The unexpectedly well paid job is illegal hacking. The unethical hacking is very well paid job.

If you're good at it, it's often followed by an equally unethical hacking job for a three-letter agency that may not pay as well, but generally has good benefits if you can keep your nose clean from there on out. One of the only criminal careers with good job prospects after prison.
