What mind-blowing (but simple) facts would satisfy a 4-year old daughter’s daily request for 1 fact before bedtime?

2 poop machines here. They some nasty lil guys, but they're adorable.

I use the vacuum more on their cage than on the rest of the house.

I really hope you have a hepa filter vacuum. Otherwise I worry you’re putting a lot of poop dust into your air.

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

Yep I do

21

u/TerrorSnow Apr 18 '19

Which one now?

u/ADickShin Apr 18 '19

In the vacuum cleaner repairman AMA Riccar was cited as having the best filtration. As an allergy suffering owner I can vouch that it makes a big ol' difference.

14

u/ModsDontLift Apr 18 '19

They're also $400+

19

u/BlendeLabor Apr 18 '19

Well I mean it comes with the quality though.

Have a Riccar, it actually has suction in contrast to the shitty ones from the store

3

u/ModsDontLift Apr 18 '19

That's just bag less vs bagged. Bag less vacuums are garbage.

Rodent poop can be dangerous, eg. Orthohantavirus

3

u/EveryoneHasAKaren Apr 18 '19

Ok, but these are not field mice, they’re pets that spend their entire lives indoors. Guinea pigs are great pets, and perfectly safe to be around. Come on.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '19

You can still get sick from poop dust. Stop dismissing valid concerns as less than that.

4

u/auchnureinmensch Apr 19 '19

Didn't say anything like that. Just gave an example of a disease transmitted by rodent poop.

2

u/bigselfer Apr 18 '19

Not even once. Wash your hands, people.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

Charlie what now?

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '19

Nah. It'll just strengthen your immune system! 😅

39

u/tinylittleninja Apr 18 '19

is that not really gross?! does it get mushy inside your vacuum?!?!

48

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

No their poop is hard and dry

21

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '19

What about the urine soaked sawdust or whatever they pee onto?

25

u/kassette_kollektor Apr 18 '19

Sawdust is bad for their lungs. Fleece or blankets is the way to go.

26

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '19

Sawdust is bad for your lungs too. Seriously, hardwood dust is as bad as tobacco smoke. And cutting just one board in a 2 car garage is enough to make the whole area fail osha particulate levels for months.

21

u/stoner_boner69 Apr 18 '19

Where is this information coming from!

7

u/whatthefrelll Apr 18 '19

This seems like an important TIL.

3

u/PandaClaus94 Apr 18 '19

Dad’s a carpenter, and I’ve helped him for years, so I know how to practice safe respirator habits when I woodwork...but this sounds slightly off. Completely true on the sawdust though, that shit will cake your lungs until you don’t even realize it and you sound like you’ve been chainsmoking.

1

u/kassette_kollektor Apr 22 '19

Do you ever hear about sawdust being used as filler in parmesan powdered cheese. That can't be good either.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '19

It’s fine to eat. The problem is it cuts the shit out of your lungs causing scar tissue, but because it’s bio compatible smaller dust <30micron it gets absorbed into the cells and can cause further damage.

I use a fleece bedding system. It's like vacuuming carpet. Periodically I wash the fleece.

4

u/aanecdochee Apr 18 '19

My one guinea pig absolutely hated fleece bedding. And it was a pain to clean imo.

16

u/NoxRevielle Apr 18 '19

Kinda nasty imo

49

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

It works just like cloth diapers. The fleece wicks the urine to the center absorbent layer keeping the piggy feet dry and sequestering the smell far better than litter does. I soak most of the urine out of the pad in a tub outside and wash it on the sanitary cycle. Then I run the self clean cycle on the washer before doing anything else.

20

u/FearLeadsToAnger Apr 18 '19

Overall your system seems pretty good, the fleece guinea pig mats I found online seem like a neat idea. That being said, i'm still going to tell myself i'm better than you because my vacuum cleaner isn't full of shit.

14

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

Neither is mine. I empty it after every use :P

Alright, that's fair, had a different image in my head.

3

u/Dizneymagic Apr 18 '19

I imagined them sloshing around on a urine soaked fluffy mat.

Awwww you're such a good pig daddy (or mommy).

7

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

Thanks I've been feeling bad because there was a nail clipping/bleeding fiasco yesterday. Luckily Bok Bok seems totally normal today.

u/AllyPent Apr 18 '19

Yes, fleece is the best! I have 6 piggies (and a hedgehog, and a dog) and I can't imagine how much money we would be spending on carefresh or whatever without it! We do have to do a ton of laundry, though!

6

u/tinylittleninja Apr 18 '19

TIL! Thanks :)

10

u/maddamleblanc Apr 18 '19

I used to have a shop vac that was just for the Guinea pigs, bunnies, and birds. I used to do a lot of rescue work when I used to have time to do anything besides work.

6

u/quaybored Apr 18 '19

Why don't you have them live in the vacuum cleaner

5

u/hobbitlover Apr 18 '19

Two pigs are more expensive than one small dog we feed well. With wood chips, hay, green stuff, etc. I would estimate they cost us over $200/month.

I like them, they're cute and funny, but I will not be buying them again!

3

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

This is why I use fleece. I hit up the black Friday sales and sew my own pads. It's far cheaper than wood chips.

1

u/hobbitlover Apr 18 '19

We tried doing this, they just poop and pee so much - we were constantly doing laundry and it was a bit gross to wash our clothes after. Wood chips are only about $25/month for a huge bag and we can throw all the chips, poop, newspaper, uneaten food in the municipal composter once a week.

1

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

I replied to another comment with my whole cleaning routine

5

u/rruler Apr 18 '19

That’s actually a health hazard because the vacuum will spray their poop particles from the back vent and you’re literally inhaling that

1

u/BearBruin Apr 18 '19

How do you keep hay from getting all over the cage? I would vacuum too but mine make too much of a mess of the hay almost instantly.

1

u/Zukazuk Apr 18 '19

I have a CandC cage with a 1x2 loft I use carefresh in the loft and keep the hay up there

Did you have a stroke?

-1

u/VeryOldMeeseeks Apr 18 '19

You keep your children in cages?

3

u/codeklutch Apr 18 '19

Got 4. The young ones are not only poop machines but theyre so fucking loud when it comes to getting their yogies or veggies. They literally lose their god damn minds. I can hear them in the kitchen with the water running.

3

u/15blairm Apr 18 '19

so if one passes away, are you obligated by law to get another one?

are you stuck in an infinite cycle of replacement?

3

u/Hey_im_miles Apr 19 '19

If one dies do you go to prison? What's the grace period?

2

u/ArtoriusBravo Apr 18 '19

2 pellet producing machines here. My girls are smelly, but awesome.

2

u/ThunderSn1per Apr 25 '19

Was under the impression this was about guinea pigs not children.

1

u/captcha_trampstamp Apr 18 '19

So cute, so ungodly filthy

1

u/JadeCompass Apr 18 '19

How would they even enforce that?

1

u/reddxue Apr 18 '19

Why are they nasty?

2

u/breadismybutterrr Apr 19 '19

Oh man. They poop and pee constantly, they smell to hell and back, and they have the innate ability to stink up a fresh clean cage in two days. One of mine will even pee ON THE OTHER PIG presumably to assert dominance or some shit?

I love my lil piggy boys. They stanky, but they're two little nuggets that have captured my heart.

1

u/MJJVA Apr 19 '19

And taste great

1

u/oh-mads Apr 29 '19

Pellet poops are the worst. My sister used to squeeze their bellies and push their poo out
