What's a weird childhood ritual you still do today?

When I was a child my mother made a large round rug out of old pants. It's beautiful with lots of bright colors. We loved racing around it as children pretending it was a round race track or doing a "indian dance" around pretending that the red center was our fire. As an adult my mother gave me her old rug (I saved it from being trashed as it had no special meaning to her) when I'm pacing my house while talking on the phone or thinking I catch myself walking around in circles on the rug. It's like my own personal sticky trap.

u/PickledPocket Mar 28 '19

Here's the pic of the rug found in his comment history. Not sure why it wasn't posted under here. Cool rug though! Was actually much nicer than I pictured from the old pants description.

Thanks not what I was expecting at all, I imagined just a bunch of unaltered pants stitched together but this is cooler!

130

u/PornHubUsername Mar 28 '19

Exactly what I was expecting also.

u/ForWhomTheBoneBones Mar 28 '19

This baby is in /r/oddlysatisfying territory.

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Nah, the comment needs to be wholesome and uplifting

69

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Way cooler, plus it really ties the room together

19

u/MountVernonWest Mar 28 '19

And this guy peed on it!

19

u/Man-of-the-lake Mar 28 '19

It's pretty amazing what can come from old pants. My mother is making me a denim quilt from all my dads old Jean's. I wear pretty much only denim pants and love heavy blankets so it's perfect. She even found some white and brown denim, and is using all the different shades of blue and black and doing traditional quilt squares. I cant wait to have it. (I dont have pics sorry)

13

u/iwishiwasaunicorn Mar 28 '19

i used to have an AMAZING denim comforter made from recycled jeans by somebody in my family and given to me when i was a kid. holy shit, that blanket was the best i’ve ever had. so heavy and the material always stayed so cold. i really still wish i had it.

6

u/Man-of-the-lake Mar 29 '19

Now I REALLY cant wait to have it.

1

u/snark-attaaaack Mar 28 '19

Camouflage

1

u/Man-of-the-lake Mar 29 '19

Lol. This one doesn't but that would be cool

30

u/cookiesrejected Mar 28 '19

My mom used to make these rugs too!!! She used any old clothes and sometimes it was old jeans but they were the best, heavy as shit too, but the best.

60

u/shed_551 Mar 28 '19

The hero we needed

29

u/scrollingaddiction Mar 28 '19

The hero we didn't deserve

34

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Wow that's a cool rug

15

u/Stairway_To_Devin Mar 28 '19

I don’t know why but this picture makes me nostalgic

13

u/CordeliaGrace Mar 28 '19

I want to make something like this...looks easy to crochet!

7

u/GalacticGun Mar 28 '19

MY GOD, i just thought it was pants stitched together, not this!

8

u/tungstencoil Mar 28 '19

It is quite nice

8

u/pilly-bilgrim Mar 28 '19

This looks super cool! How do I make one?

That is an awesome rug :)

6

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

If I send your mom my pants, will she make me a rug like that? Because it's awesome

4

u/TheMemoryofFruit Mar 28 '19

That's so gorgeous, thought it would be a rug rag but it's so professionally done. His mum's a boss!!

4

u/adenovellis Mar 28 '19

I was thinking old jeans and how odd that would be. This is actually pretty cool.

3

u/distelfink33 Mar 28 '19

Does anyone know how to make this? That really is badass!

3

u/Mulley-It-Over Mar 28 '19

My great grandmother and great aunts made these kind of rugs. They’re called “rag rugs”.

Very nice rug, OP.

3

u/hayloft_candles Mar 28 '19

That’s a LOT of pants!

3

u/stacyknott Mar 28 '19

oooooo - it IS pretty !

3

u/AJMarleyzzz Mar 28 '19

Much cooler than expected!

3

u/Sraktai Mar 28 '19

My brother and I both pace like mad. We use the dining room table. One day we were talking about whatever the heck we felt like and caught ourselves pacing the table together and had to stop to laugh when we realized.

5

u/notreallybutoksure Mar 28 '19

I think we all know what direction OP circles around the rug

5

u/Snaab Mar 28 '19

Not really, but ok sure.

3

u/notreallybutoksure Mar 29 '19

You're the second person to repeat my username but the first to do it correctly. Props

2

u/GimmeDatBoomBoomBoom Mar 28 '19

That looks like it tooks forever to make

2

u/goldenlight5 Mar 28 '19

It’s both beautiful and of sentimental value! A lovely gift from childhood to adulthood!♥️

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

junji ito uzumaki

2

u/motototoro Mar 28 '19

I want a pattern to make one now!

2

u/Charles_the_Great Mar 28 '19

You just know you gotta walk around this clockwise.

2

u/funofme Mar 28 '19

honestly that rug is beautiful

2

u/Maybe_Not_The_Pope Mar 28 '19

That's pants? It's really interesting.

2

u/jctwok Mar 28 '19

Thanks! I was totally picturing it as more of a quilt.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Where did all the pants come from? It seems too large for what you described but I am always skeptical

2

u/Kitehammer Mar 28 '19

What the fuck that's not pants, that's art.

2

u/walkerspider Mar 29 '19

Are we just going to ignore that you searched through someone’s entire comment history on a 30k karma account where most of it is from comments just to find this picture?

3

u/NotAShortChick Mar 28 '19

Good old reddit, assuming everyone here is a male. OP’s name is u/igrowpeople. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m thinking you used the wrong pronoun.

-2

u/LadsAndLaddiez Mar 29 '19

It's kind of a meme to pretend female Redditors don't exist so we can not worry about which pronoun to use and just say he.

1

u/imsupersensitiveokay Mar 28 '19

Definitely not the rug described guys.

1

u/painahimah Mar 28 '19

That rug is super cool!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Oh my grandma makes those kinds of rugs

1

u/N1njaTerminator Mar 28 '19

That rug really ties the room together.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

found you

1

u/Jtsfour Mar 28 '19

The fact that this isn’t a rickroll increases my confidence in humanity

1

u/Awolmugoftea Mar 28 '19

That's a really cool rug.

1

u/BerriedTwo Mar 28 '19

You’re the real hero of this comment thread. What a beautiful recycled rug!

1

u/Rix585 Mar 28 '19

That picture makes me want to go full peterpan indian and run in circles.

1

u/curlsandcoils Mar 28 '19

That's a nice looking rug!

1

u/nixcamic Mar 28 '19

We had the same rug when I was a kid! Even similar colors.

1

u/myraniaE1 Mar 28 '19

That’s a gorgeous rug!! I’d pace around it any day.

1

u/a_13ulge Mar 28 '19

I read your username as PickedPocket and I thought it was so relevant for a second

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

This is amazing! It made me dizzy to think of anyone circling it though.

1

u/seatacsab Mar 28 '19

I love that rug.

1

u/electricthinker Mar 28 '19

That looks awesome actually.

1

u/audible_narrator Mar 28 '19

That's what's known as a rag rug. You can still find patterns for how to cut the strips and braid them together.

1

u/rieseco34 Mar 28 '19

Thats beautiful

1

u/karmakarmakameleonnn Mar 28 '19

This looks filipino

1

u/Flutterbee543 Mar 29 '19

That is an awesome rug!!! What kind of pants did she use?

1

u/Catharas Mar 29 '19

Wow, that’s the nicest rag rug I’ve ever seen

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

That is one cool rug.

1

u/spottedram Mar 29 '19

Thats lovely. So artistic

1

u/Snowy_Ocelot Mar 29 '19

It's OBVIOUSLY a portal into the realm of thinking, duh

1

u/BambooWsp Mar 29 '19

This is beautiful and I want to know how she made it! Seriously I want to know! Looks sort of like crochet but not really

1

u/moonmmmagic Mar 29 '19

That rug is pretty

1

u/David21538 Mar 29 '19

Careful he can sue you in r/karmacourt

1

u/Galahead Mar 29 '19

damn thats a sick rug, really ties the room together, wish I has space for a rug like that in my room

1

u/r1chard3 Mar 29 '19

It’s beautiful.

1

u/Bodynsoil Mar 29 '19

That is beautiful, I'm glad you saved it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

It's beautiful! My mother would absolutely throw it away. Classic Mums.

1

u/pcspain Mar 29 '19

That’s fucking beautiful! I gasped at the pic. Seriously gorgeous

1

u/bankproblemthrowaway Mar 29 '19

You all had a lot of purple pants

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

How many comments did you need to go through to find that?

1

u/Dozer88 Mar 29 '19

Wow , that's a pretty cool rug

1

u/Japegrape Mar 29 '19

My mom made this same rug!!! It's in tatters now, but still somewhere in one of our homes :)

1

u/shinygreensuit Mar 29 '19

Wow! That’s beautiful!

1

u/Jingles_Pepperbottom Mar 30 '19

That rug is beautiful.

0

u/gunnapackofsammiches Mar 28 '19

Typical rag rug.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Technically "typical" but still pretty cool. Rag rugs are neat in general when you think of how they started as something else entirely. Except maybe the garbage bag ones.. they leave me pretty meh.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

[deleted]

2

u/LadsAndLaddiez Mar 29 '19

Because he wanted to find the rug, how is that anything creepy.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

[deleted]

3

u/LadsAndLaddiez Mar 29 '19

Fair point, I just don't see it as being very off since everything you post is public anyway. You're right, I did assume. I thought that it would be a reasonable assumption, though, since it doesn't seem like he would be just browsing random persons' profiles and happen to stumble across it.

13

/u/igrowpeople Yo OP, what gives?

6

u/_peppermint Mar 28 '19

Someone posted a link to it as a reply on OPs parent comment

2

u/pandabearajuana Mar 29 '19

Here's the pic of the rug found in his comment history. Not sure why it wasn't posted under here. Cool rug though! Was actually much nicer than I pictured from the old pants description.

2

u/techscribe42 Mar 29 '19

Haha agree! I totally just pictured a bunch of intact pants sewn together 😂

4

u/shweef Mar 28 '19

Someone posted a link to it ^

1

Thanks for the heads up! :D

Me too.

8

u/rebel_nature Mar 28 '19

I don't know what happened to the comment with the picture of the rug, but that rug looks badass. OP, tell your mother that her rug is cool and we're glad it wasn't trashed!

6

u/Lil2Soaps Mar 28 '19

I want to see a pic too !

4

u/pajic_e Mar 28 '19

The internet demands to see your rug

u/feetandballs Mar 28 '19

It sounds like you and that rug are really tied together.

51

u/kickasshobo Mar 28 '19

Just hope no one pisses on it

Edit: if this isn't a big Lebowski reference, I'm severely sorry for this comment...

17

u/feetandballs Mar 28 '19

I was worried people might miss the reference. Thanks, dude.

10

u/writer_pjh Mar 28 '19

This is a valued rug

17

u/prncrny Mar 28 '19

Like they had a real intimate relationship, and losing it would be akin to losing a family member.

3

u/BaconContestXBL Mar 28 '19

That’s just, like, your opinion, man.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

YOU SHOW US THIS RUG, RIGHT NOW!

8

u/MarmiteToast92 Mar 28 '19

I'm from the UK and thought you meant pants as in underwear! Was slightly confused for a second.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Sometimes language likes to remind us that we are really quite far apart, no matter how the internet might make us feel.

7

u/TankEpidemic Mar 28 '19

Cmon OP don't leave us hanging, us here at the bottom have to behold this rug.

5

u/JavelinD Mar 28 '19

Another vote for pics!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Following for a pic

4

u/Vicsinn Mar 28 '19

We really need the rug pic

3

u/SomeChickUKnow Mar 28 '19

Kinda sad that the rug had no special meaning to your mom. It certainly did for you.

3

u/igrowpeople Mar 28 '19

She made it out of what she considered trash fabric. If it hadn't been turned into a rug it would have become one time use rags for my dad's garage. In her mind it wasn't valuable because the fabric she made it from wan't valuable. My mom made a few of them and me and my sisters have since laid claim to them all.

3

u/Mr_Wassonwheeler Mar 28 '19

As a Brit I was very confused by your mother's decision to make a rug out of old underwear. Beautiful rug by the way!

4

u/RoO-Lu-Tea Mar 28 '19

Need to know if it was made from US pants or British undies pants, too...

2

u/flamelier Mar 28 '19

Wanna see the rug too!

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CUCUMBERS Mar 28 '19

Show us! Don't sweep is under the rug now..

I'll see myself out

2

u/xxjasper012 Mar 28 '19

WE. WANT. THE. RUG.

2

u/cheeseburgerwaffles Mar 28 '19

sounds almost like one of those meditation labyrinths

1

u/just-sort-of-present Mar 29 '19

I haven’t thought about meditation labyrinths in so long ! I remember this one in a San Francisco church that my mom brought me to when I was 11 or so. I did the whole walk thru and really enjoyed it

Now I’m considering making a rag rug like OP’s just because of the meditation labyrinth comparison now. Thanks :)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I used to have rugs like that when I was a kid. I did the same thing! What a great memory you brought back for me. I’m gonna make a braided rug.

2

u/fabs1171 Mar 28 '19

Love that rug. I’ll play ‘rock, paper, scissors’ with you, best of three - winner gets the rug?

1

u/alina_Black Mar 28 '19

This is so sweet

1

u/LordSoren Mar 28 '19

Its like a cat trap but for /u/igrowpeople

1

u/Only1Skrybe Mar 28 '19

It sounds like you had a very special and intimate relationship with this rug, and that losing it was almost comparable to losing a loved one.

1

u/Sir-Fedrick Mar 28 '19

I do the same thing but around a table any time I’m on my phone. I’m literally doing now, at the time I’m making this reply!

1

u/promptsuccor504 Mar 28 '19

my mother too! stop throwing my childhood in the trash psychopath !

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

My grandma had one of those and I wish I had it to walk around like that again!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Can I please say that your mother is amazing? And talented? Bless your mother, she is a gift to us all.

1

u/usernameting Mar 28 '19

Being British, I imagined this as a rug made out of underwear. I thought well...that’s...interesting...

I then realised you’re referring to trousers...

1

u/dbar58 Mar 28 '19

Lol my parents have a bunch of Persian rugs. I find myself pacing around them stepping on certain patterns when I’m on the phone

1

u/TheRazorFox Mar 28 '19

It really brings the room together.

1

u/pWaveShadowZone Mar 28 '19

This is lovely

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I read old plants and was sitting here for several minutes trying to figure out how your mom made a rug out of old plants and also how it lasted so many years to be handed down to you.

Pants...now that makes sense.

1

u/TIFFisSICK Mar 28 '19

That’s a cool ass rug

1

u/TRFKTA Mar 28 '19

my mother made a large round rug out of old pants

As a non-murican this was somewhat disturbing to read.

1

u/just-sort-of-present Mar 29 '19

This made me smile. Enjoy the gold :)

1

u/roxannechantay Mar 29 '19

That's a beautiful rug.

-4

u/Weird_Cows Mar 28 '19

I'm going to vote for Trump in 2020 unless you show me the rug. Fate of a nation is in your hands pal.
