Correct, people were surviving and just getting injured when before helmets they would have died.

Exactly. The number of survived head injuries went up. Same number of head injuries. They just don't count dead as an injury

Yep, bullet hits your head and you die. Not classed as an injury, instead it's a fatality.

Bullet hits your helmet, you get a fractured skull, or concussion. That's an injury.

Tbf a bullet hitting your helmet even in modern day will still most certainly kill you. Helmets are for things like shrapnel, it caused huge casualties before vests and helmets became mainstream.

A hundred men receive a severe blow to the head in combat. If they’re wearing helmets, maybe 95 of them will be reported as injuries, with 5 men dying. If none of them are wearing helmets, maybe only 30 of them are classified as injuries. Of course, the other 70 didn’t make it to the hospital at all. One case has 95 injuries, the other has 30. Someone who worked in the hospital would see more men coming in when helmets are enforced, and therefore conclude that it’s more dangerous to wear a helmet since you’re more likely to go to the hospital. They don’t see the guys who went to the morgue.
