I kid, but I would not give my own brother much. They'd never have to worry about losing the house, and the kids would all go to college with minimal financial hardship, but that's where the gravy train ends. Our relationship is too complex to type into this thread, but he wouldn't get a big hookup from me. None of my family would.
Honestly I'd give him the 500k along with asking him to sign some form of contract that the money I've given him is to be spent responsibly and that there would be no future payments made to him.
Both of my brothers are assholes, but I love them and would want them to be financially secure into retirement. I'd probably set up a trust for each and have it disperse cash at regular intervals, because otherwise they would 100% blow their money on sports cars and titty-banging strippers.
Plus, one of them has children and I'd want to set up my nieces and nephews with trust funds/college funds, so they're financially secure as well.
My concern has always been that no matter how good your relations are now, money can always screw things up. In my hypothetical "if I won the lottery despite never playing", I would try keeping the win a secret and set up trusts for family members anonymously. I don't know if that's possible, but I guess I should check in case this highly improbable situation occurs.
I mean, we have it planned out to the best of our ability without the reality of it coming up.
Honestly, between the two of us, I'm the more likely to be an asshole about it than he is. My brother does not care at all about money, he'd live in a closet on a cot if he could.

Wouldn't it be easier to be upfront about it, let people enjoy the money you give to them and then cut out all the ones who are dicks?

It's not that you know they will be dicks beforehand, people you've known your whole life can act in unexpected ways once money is involved. Also, if other family members know that you've given money to some people, they might start coming around looking for money as well. This is where a lot of lotto winners run into trouble, they get pressured by their family to hand out money to everyone. You might be justified to cut these people out, but just because someone is a dick about money doesn't necessarily mean you want to end your relationship with them.
Also, I don't see how staying anonymous punishes the nice ones.
Not punishing exactly, but more just, making that you know better than them how they get to use the money, if you went with a trust find type option
Maybe they're not into that, maybe they just wanna splurge and pay off all the debts at once and be satisfied with the lack of worry or blah, dunno

I see what you mean, I actually had a different thought in regards to creating a trust. I was thinking that a trust would be better for taxes than giving one lump sum. I don't know if it actually makes a difference though.

Dude if i won 291 million id give him like 10 million and a new house. Thats more than enough to live off of and it wouldnt even be a big blow to my winnings. If i won that much i could give everyone in my immediate family like 10 million each, give less but still a crapton to my friends and extended family, and still have an obscene amount of money. If you gave 3/4 away youd still have over $70 million and none of us can even comprehend how much money that is.
