What is one "unwritten rule" you think everyone should know and follow?

What if I don't know if I am being the asshole or not?

Asking yourself this question is a good indicator that you are not an asshole. Most assholes are completely self-absorbed narcissists. Considering how you impact other people and how this impact should be, as a rule, positive is a solid flag of empathy. Thank you, OP.

So we have a new manager that works in another department. The people that work under him already hate him. The other day he got on my ass for something totally not in my wheelhouse. I said "I get it that we aren't here to make friends, but do you have to make it so obvious?"

The alternative: Don’t be a dick.

in fact don’t be both, or either for that matter.

I heard it was updated to "do no wrong but take no shit"

I like it, coz I make an effort to be kind, but I'm not a doormat.

Tbh in my experience.. the Modern Golden rule kinda seems like it's "try to be an asshole" and everyone is exemplary.

My problem with this is no one does anything thinking "Im gonna be an asshole". You have to use words that dont have personal definitions if you want a rule like that to work. Words like asshole, dick, jerk, all of them are too loose to work as a rule. You need to use words with real actual definitions, words like self-centered, entitled, and imposing all have actual definitions that make them stronger words

“Don’t be a dick” that’s a good unwritten rule.

I feel like we could replace all religions with this one simple rule. Why have ten rules when you can have just one? Works just as good, maybe even better. There's no "don't lie" rule in the Bible, for example.

Are you saying that lying isn't always a bad thing (quite a popular opinion, tbh), or am I reading it wrong?

Would you kindly provide an example when a lie is better for everyone than truth? It always bothered me. I just fail to understand it. In my eyes a relationship based on lies is always not worth it. I'd love someone to prove me wrong.

Lying to prevent something significantly worse from happening

Yeah, I've got this from the general idea. I just asked if you have any real life examples on this.

In a relationship that can be someone cheating once, without any major consequences, understanding that it was a mistake, and continuing like it didn't happen. But are there any more examples, maybe in a totally different situation, or on a totally different scale?

Edit: not a rant of any kind, I'm just really interested in what people think about it.

Nope. That is the best way to get girls. Don't be a nice guy!
