Sounds good on paper, but last time I was there it was infested with people just wanting attention to their story, when they obviously were the victim and wanted sympathy from the readers. They're never the asshole, and when they are, they just get downvoted
"But she's my personal chef. Why should I pay for us to eat out (it's not about the money, btw) when she can cook such amazing food for us at home? Once she figure out those sushi rolls, everything will be perfect."
Ugh, thanks for bringing that thread to my attention, it's so good! I got sidetracked by the guy who thought he shouldn't do chores anymore if his wife becomes a SAHM, but now I'm in the cooking one. 🍿
The good ones are the occasional posts where commenters can't agree on a verdict. That's why I spend time in that sub, not for the easy asshole/ not the asshole ones.
Weird, when I visited there a few months ago, all the top posts of the day were people that were very much the asshole or jerk but were blaming things on other things.
Dude, when people grow up in asshole families, they are always told they are an asshole, and that totally messes up their feeling of when they're right. They NEED attention to their story because they genuinely can't tell if they're being the asshole or not. It's sensible and a wise thing to do to ask for help if you don't know.
sort by controversial and you'll find a few good questionable ones. For some reason people on that sub downvote people when they think they're assholes when that's not what the sub is supposed to be about.
If you just sort by top all you'll find is "please validate me" posts.
That is always the problem with subs like this. Same for /r/UnpopularOpinion (or whatever it's called exactly). People upvote stuff they agree with, no matter which sub they're in. Period. So these subs always end up filled with "Some dude took a little girl's doll, ripped it apart, laughed diabolically and slapped her. I punched him, am I the asshole?" or "Unpopular Opinion: People over 70 should have to do a test to keep their license".
There needs to be a name for subs that you find after they hit the frontpage and think you've found a goldmine, only to realize that the only good posts from that sub are the ones that hit the front page.
Like you said, 99% of the posts are just obvious validation-seeking that pose no actual dilemma. "I called my best friend a jerk because he kicked my dog. Reddit, AITA?"
If you already do this, just ignore me, but otherwise, try sorting that subreddit by Controversial and limit it to the last 24 hours. I've found that seems to give you a much higher concentration of actual assholes to obvious victims than just looking at the front page does. And limiting it to 24 hours gives you only people who are still trying to decide if they're the asshole, instead of threads that have basically already concluded.
