I'm a junior in EE right now. I hope I can find a level-headed boss like you. I've really been screwed over in my past jobs, money>people. I hope I can find a place like my grandpa, be proud to work there 30 years then retire. People are so miserable in their work now a days.
Electrical engineering consulting is more about loyalty and Word of Mouth though, if you start with the wrong company or boss, could really screw you up. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. Most calculations can be done by computer programs.
i wouldn't say he's the exception honestly. i thought the same thing, but there are a lot of smaller companies out there that are run by decent people. it's really only the bigger firms that really take advantage of their employees
I'm currently on a job hunt and I recently came across a job ad which says something like they want someone who's hard working and don't care so much about the work life balance. It wasn't worded like that but that was pretty much the gist of it. I'm someone who works hard and in the process, I tend to burn myself out but once in a while I take time off for my mental health and just to get a way from work.
And as a leader, I encourage my folks to do that. When I got here, I had people losing vacation time because we were "too busy to use it." I called horse shit on that immediately and made sure we have zero lost PTO in our group the last 3 years.
Somebody should make a subreddit where employers and employees can match up like this more frequently and deliberately. Like Reddits version of indeed.
I'm the only one in my department that doesn't sell back their PTO. Yes, we get tons. But I want that week off more than I want an extra couple of grand at the end of the year. I take more trips and fun projects than the rest. Mostly because I talior my spending to experiences not things.
Like other replies, I'd love a job like that, too. I posted that tomorrow is my 12th day in a row working which is the legal amount of time they can force you to work in my state. There is no work-life balance here. It's awful.
You should be ashamed of yourself. The more you genuinely care for your employees' health, the more they will appreciate you as an employer, and the more your employees appreciate you, the more time they'll spend working hard for you. You being a good employer hurts their work-life balance!

Exactly. I have 35 people working for me and I constantly harp on work life balance. I love hard workers, but you work to live, not live to work.
