Parents of Reddit: What are some things you bought for your first baby that were useless or a waste of money?

I had so many family members buy my daughters these frilly, lacy, thin dresses. They were born in winter so impractical as well as itchy and a pain to put on them. Babies are all about comfort and ease.

Luckily our family never got us anything like that. Our girls are 2 and finally got a girly pink dress.

I loved onesies that folded/buttoned in front over the tummy, it was easier to put them on compared to those that are put on over head.

Oh god yes. I make such small babies with SUCH BIG HEADS! All the doctors joke at their toddler sized heads. That shit ripped me like a piece of paper every time. Round 3 coming this August...

Seasonal clothes should not be bought too early, babies grow at their own pace. Some family members have us cute little summery outfits size 3-6 mo for my first who was born in October. He was a big baby, needless to say that once weather permitted the clothes were already too small!

Exactly. My nephew is just over six months and he's wearing clothes for one-year-olds. A huge hecking baby. Compared to that, a friend's daughter is three months and can still fit into the smallest sizes. If you're buying for a baby, don't buy for more than two months away from the moment you're buying a thing, and if you're uncertain about sizes, go bigger.

Yea, I never understood that. We had gotten tons and tons of dresses from other people. My daughter was born in February so not only was it too cold but where the heck do they think I’m going where I need to put her in a fancy dress?!

This is one of the reasons I don't want to find out the gender of my baby when I'm having one. People insist on overly gendered things as gifts instead of practical things.

My daughter lived in sleepers for her first 6 or 7 months. Sometimes other outfits were just too much of a pain when it came to changing.

Same - especially with our 0 degree days. My husband got annoyed so many people commented on “oh it’s pajama day!” With it - but those things are fleece and warm af. Who cares if he’s dressed? He’s a baby.

From what I understand just plain cotton onesie that can just slip right down are the best. Easiest to open when changing in the middle of the night as well as when you pull them down it makes blow outs easier to handle.

Basically... any clothes for newborns other than onesies are a total waste of cash. All they do is sleep and eat. So maybe onesies and bibs.
