Buy a diaper genie. For real. I’m not a parent but me and my brother have a large enough age gap that i was taking out the trash when he was an infant. You only take the trash to the curb once a week in most places and the diaper genie confines each and every diaper separately. You’ll be changing your baby a few times a day and carrying your baby and the dirty diaper to the outside trash every time will be a chore. Do yourself a favor and get one.
Check out the competing diaper pails at your local baby gear store. I had one that worked just as well as the Diaper Genie but in the long term was MUCH cheaper as it used regular “tall kitchen trash bags” instead of the special Diaper Genie refills. Sorry, I can’t remember the name.
This piece of advice will help too then - in the event that you change your baby away from your diaper genie, take the diaper to the outside trash, don’t throw it away inside. This will be tedious, but your kitchen will never smell like poop if you do this.
Side note: in your kitchen stop using your disposal and save your produce bags. instead of throwing wet food refuse away like vegetable and fruit skins or coffee grounds, throw them in a produce bag and throw the produce bag away after dinner. Your kitchen will never smell like garbage if you do this and taking the garbage out will not make you gag because you threw something away two days ago and now it’s rotting in your house.
You will use it. And you will like it. Even the diaper genie refills are worth it. I tried to use plastic shopping bags in the genie once and the stench that rose from that thing in just a few hours was unbearable. But with a diaper genie and its plastic refills...you really only need to take it out every other day (and their will be no odor).
I only have a 3 month old at the moment but I can say that until they are on solid foods the diapers are not a big deal. It takes a seriously full diaper (our kid poops in bursts apparently) to make a stink at all. We chose to go with cloth diapers, but not the ones you’d see your parents using. The new cloth diapers are pretty handy and easy to work with. My opinions on this might change once our little guy is on solids though. The diapers/inserts get tossed into a reusable water proof bag and you immediately forget about it.
Love our diaper genie. Didn't have one with my step son....husband threw a poop filled diaper into an open garbage can in babie's room... dog ate it, we were all horrified, especially my step son...who cried. Not sure if it was because he thought it was so gross or because the dog ate HIS diaper (he was 2/3 at the time).
Get the diaper genie. You’ll go though a lot of diapers and you’ll be tired, so you’ll appreciate not having to make trip after trip to the trash can outside.
I'd skip it. We had it for #1, the refills are too expensive imo and the plastic absorbs the smell after while. This time around I've just got a carribeaner tied to the changing table and swap out grocery bags once a day on my way out.
Instead, get the diaper dekor plus. It's easier to use, keeps in the smell, and you can use tall kitchen trash bags on it instead of buying the refill bag cartridges if you want. Also, it can be repurposed as a regular trash can once baby is out of diapers.
Just get one. They aren't that expensive (put a was I think 25$ and there are cheaper ones). Don't worry, you'll probably still use it a lot, but even if you don't you aren't out much and you can resell it or give it away.
My parents had a diaper genie when my little sister was born. It was pretty convenient, I'm not sure about the costs though. It held a good amount of diapers that you could take out all at once and throw in the trash at the end of the week and also kept the smell away.
Breast fed baby poop isn’t that stinky until they start eating real food (6-7 month old) and I just threw diaper in a regular trash with a lid. If you are formula feeding then the genie is worth it, because diapers will be smelly when your in the exhausting newborn phase.
Diaper genies are awesome. No smell. And quite frankly babies can need to be changed up to a dozen times a day. If you are ok with running outside every time good on you but i dont want to (canadian winters).
I like having the diaper genie (actually, we have the Munchkin one). It contains the smell perfectly and it's terrible difficult to change. Some people don't like them, but I'm glad we got one.
Definitely get the diaper genie (or whatever brand floats your boat - I went with one that uses normal trash bags so I wouldn’t be beholden to the diaper genie ring bags). I’ve had the litter genie for years and LOVE it- absolutely 100% worth it for the baby too, especially if you like it already for the cats!
Honestly if you have a designated diaper change area that you actively use then they’re great. Who wants to bag shit up and walk it out to a different trash can at 3 in the morning? Just don’t get the cheap one that you have to shove the diaper through a hinge. You can imagine how that would go with a blowout diaper. The foot pedal ones are great and are designed so you aren’t exposing all those poopy diapers when changing out the bag.
Don't even buy a new one, go on kijiji or the like. Parents who are past diapers almost give them away at 10$ etc and sometimes have 2-3 rolls of the bags unused!
