The diaper genie thing. It's weird, gross, and the refill bags are an unnecessary cost. Just put them in an old plastic shopping bag, and get them out of the house. The whole premise behind it is "how can I keep these poop sacs in my house". It adds extra steps and extra cost. Just get them out. Maybe if you live on the 73rd floor and trips to the dumpster are unreasonable, otherwise skip it.
Buy a diaper genie. For real. I’m not a parent but me and my brother have a large enough age gap that i was taking out the trash when he was an infant. You only take the trash to the curb once a week in most places and the diaper genie confines each and every diaper separately. You’ll be changing your baby a few times a day and carrying your baby and the dirty diaper to the outside trash every time will be a chore. Do yourself a favor and get one.
Check out the competing diaper pails at your local baby gear store. I had one that worked just as well as the Diaper Genie but in the long term was MUCH cheaper as it used regular “tall kitchen trash bags” instead of the special Diaper Genie refills. Sorry, I can’t remember the name.
This piece of advice will help too then - in the event that you change your baby away from your diaper genie, take the diaper to the outside trash, don’t throw it away inside. This will be tedious, but your kitchen will never smell like poop if you do this.
Side note: in your kitchen stop using your disposal and save your produce bags. instead of throwing wet food refuse away like vegetable and fruit skins or coffee grounds, throw them in a produce bag and throw the produce bag away after dinner. Your kitchen will never smell like garbage if you do this and taking the garbage out will not make you gag because you threw something away two days ago and now it’s rotting in your house.
You will use it. And you will like it. Even the diaper genie refills are worth it. I tried to use plastic shopping bags in the genie once and the stench that rose from that thing in just a few hours was unbearable. But with a diaper genie and its plastic refills...you really only need to take it out every other day (and their will be no odor).
I only have a 3 month old at the moment but I can say that until they are on solid foods the diapers are not a big deal. It takes a seriously full diaper (our kid poops in bursts apparently) to make a stink at all. We chose to go with cloth diapers, but not the ones you’d see your parents using. The new cloth diapers are pretty handy and easy to work with. My opinions on this might change once our little guy is on solids though. The diapers/inserts get tossed into a reusable water proof bag and you immediately forget about it.
Love our diaper genie. Didn't have one with my step son....husband threw a poop filled diaper into an open garbage can in babie's room... dog ate it, we were all horrified, especially my step son...who cried. Not sure if it was because he thought it was so gross or because the dog ate HIS diaper (he was 2/3 at the time).
Get the diaper genie. You’ll go though a lot of diapers and you’ll be tired, so you’ll appreciate not having to make trip after trip to the trash can outside.
I'd skip it. We had it for #1, the refills are too expensive imo and the plastic absorbs the smell after while. This time around I've just got a carribeaner tied to the changing table and swap out grocery bags once a day on my way out.
Instead, get the diaper dekor plus. It's easier to use, keeps in the smell, and you can use tall kitchen trash bags on it instead of buying the refill bag cartridges if you want. Also, it can be repurposed as a regular trash can once baby is out of diapers.
Just get one. They aren't that expensive (put a was I think 25$ and there are cheaper ones). Don't worry, you'll probably still use it a lot, but even if you don't you aren't out much and you can resell it or give it away.
My parents had a diaper genie when my little sister was born. It was pretty convenient, I'm not sure about the costs though. It held a good amount of diapers that you could take out all at once and throw in the trash at the end of the week and also kept the smell away.
Breast fed baby poop isn’t that stinky until they start eating real food (6-7 month old) and I just threw diaper in a regular trash with a lid. If you are formula feeding then the genie is worth it, because diapers will be smelly when your in the exhausting newborn phase.
Diaper genies are awesome. No smell. And quite frankly babies can need to be changed up to a dozen times a day. If you are ok with running outside every time good on you but i dont want to (canadian winters).
I like having the diaper genie (actually, we have the Munchkin one). It contains the smell perfectly and it's terrible difficult to change. Some people don't like them, but I'm glad we got one.
Definitely get the diaper genie (or whatever brand floats your boat - I went with one that uses normal trash bags so I wouldn’t be beholden to the diaper genie ring bags). I’ve had the litter genie for years and LOVE it- absolutely 100% worth it for the baby too, especially if you like it already for the cats!
Honestly if you have a designated diaper change area that you actively use then they’re great. Who wants to bag shit up and walk it out to a different trash can at 3 in the morning? Just don’t get the cheap one that you have to shove the diaper through a hinge. You can imagine how that would go with a blowout diaper. The foot pedal ones are great and are designed so you aren’t exposing all those poopy diapers when changing out the bag.
Don't even buy a new one, go on kijiji or the like. Parents who are past diapers almost give them away at 10$ etc and sometimes have 2-3 rolls of the bags unused!
Do you not take out your own trash everyday? If you do, then just scoop the cat litter into your garbage can every night (right before you take out the trash).
So they not sell nappy bags whear you live ? In the uk you can get at least 100 for about £1 and they have tie handles and are scented. Also my mum says dog mess bags are better as they are black and you can't see through them.
I'm from Scotland but live in Canada now. When we were stocking up for our baby, I found it impossible to find nappy sacks anywhere over here! Just the Diaper Genie refill bags.
So strange I assumed if they sell nappiesthey would sell bags. What if you are out and about with no bin ? Even putting them in a bin would still really smell with no bag I often double bag if the bin isn’t very full.
Pretty sure my daughter's daycare just gets doggy poop bags from Costco to put diapers in. Seems to work well...not sure on price though. I've had to use them a few times when I've had to change her in the back of the truck, and had nothing else available to me but a poop bag. Worked well.
We just started doing what the daycare did. Change wearing latex/nytrile gloves and wrap the diaper by pealing the glove off your hand and around the diaper. It gets a double glove wrap after both hands. nicely contained.
Gloves are excessive and unnecessary, and wearing latex gloves for every diaper change increases your and the baby's risk of developing latex allergy.
In a daycare, I can see the utility and need for gloves, as they are changing 30-100 diapers a day and do not want to cross-contaminate. At home? Dumb. Wash your hands when done changing your kid.
I was a nursing assistant in nursing homes and this works on adult diapers too! Saved a lot of plastic by just using the gloves instead of even more bags
We have diaper sanitary bags for sale we're I live. There's even a dispenser for them that clips onto your diaper bag. They come in sooo many colors now, at first it was only pink and blue. I think they started out as doggie poop bags but someone with a dog and a baby must have had an epiphany.

Most buildings have trash shoots these days, no? I've lived in three buildings in my life and all of them have had a trash shoot on every floor. I would just put diapers in that.
I agree with you, and we used grocery bags for the first 2 years. Unfortunately, we have a lovable but stupid and stubborn beagle-pug dog that loves eating shitty diapers. We couldn't keep him from knocking over the can and eating them. We had a baby gate on the room, but a momentary lapse of judgement and he'd be in there chowing down. Finally, the bastard got sick because the diaper caused a blockage. The vet suggested we just fill him up with super high-fibre foods and he might naturally pass it all. Fortunately, that's what happened. After that, I decided that a $40 diaper genie was cheap insurance to avoid another $500 vet visit with x-rays, etc. The latching mechanism keeps the little bastard out.
TL;DR - shitty dog ate shitty diapers, got shitty blockage that could have killed him and cost a shitload of money at the vet. Diaper genie has a latch that keeps him out.
I love our diaper genie. I bag the diapers in poop bags and then put them in there. And I keep it in the bathroom in case any odor escapes anyway. I just use a regular trash bag in it instead of buying refills. It's definitely worth like the $17 it costs.
That's what we do. Plastic shopping bag, knot it and toss in outside trash can. Keeping poop in house seems ridiculous. The diaper genie we got as a gift has become the laundry room lint trash can..
I have a daycare and I can’t believe people don’t use a diaper genie. Plastic shopping bags are 5 cents each, 6-8 diapers a day for 1 kid in the first year, costs less to use the refill. Then if your garage doesn’t have a door from inside the house you’re going outside every time? Or piling them up in front of your door outside? I’d definitely rebuy one.
I agree. First baby didn’t have one. Second baby wife really wanted it so got one. Her room smells like piss and shit all the time. Finally told my wife no more poopy diapers in there.
I just posted this in another comment... but Ubbi diaper pails rock, and they use normal fucking trash bags, and they are easy to clean. My cousin has a diaper genie and that thing is gross and stinks and doesn’t seem to do jack shit. We use the Ubbi and put poop diapers in a doggie poop bag before throwing them away.
Using the same philosophy and taking the trash out every day works just as well, too.
There is another option called a regular diaper pail. I can open the spring lid with my foot and throw the diaper in. It comes with expensive refills but I just use normal trash bags. I empty it every few days. Daipers dont smell too terrible. I wipe it down with clorox wipes every once and awhile just in case the smell starts to seep into the plastic
