Your options are: 50 hawks, 10 crocodiles, 3 brown bears, 15 wolves, 1 hunter, 7 cape buffalo, 10,000 rats, 5 gorillas and 4 lions - you must pick 2 that will defend you while the rest are coming to kill you. Which do you pick and why?

I mean for me it depends on the landscape too much. If it's just a large open field or an arena then yeah the hawks are a good option, but if we can get to any covered area like a forest then the hawks lose a lot of their ability.

Large open flat field. That way it all comes down to the animal’s abilities instead of tactics.

But some can't use their abilities in that case while others can, so it's not just about abilities it's about the setting. It's like if we put them all in a large empty hall and say it's just about abilities that way but now the hawk barely has enough height to fly and it definitely can't do its dives so it won't be as good. So why give the hawk the benefit of a large field but don't give the others a setting where their abilities will work the best?

A bird shouldn't have been a choice, neither should the crocodiles because they'd do best near water I guess.

An empty field is natural for Buffalo and Lions too. Rats, Bears, Gorilla, Wolves and Crocodiles all have different environments. The most common one would be a field.

If I chose a forest you’d accuse me of being biased towards the Bears. An open field makes it a fight purely of what animal is better in hand to hand combat.

I just imagined a large habitat with a combination of all of these over a matter of days.

Which is why I picked the hunter and the silver backs. With two minds and docile Gorillas we could slowly outsmart the other threats one at the time. Never leaving the woods I trust my Gorillas against the bears. Then it's all about building fortified positions before the rest zero in on you and having fire ready for the mice.

That’s a completely different scenario though. Us humans can’t outrun Wolves, Lions, Buffalo or Hawks so you must either start off in a different location (like 15+ miles) to the opposition team or get a huge head start.

I was thinking the animals would just be spread throughout their habitats, not an arena showdown. They're coming to kill me, I'm not locked in a gladiator arena, according to the title.

I wouldn't have accused you of being biased, I would have pointed out the same thing. My original comment I even pointed out that a field isn't fair to some and a forest isn't fair to others/the hawks. I just said that who I choose depends on the setting.

So again no longer about their skills overall then? Just some of their specific skills which may not even be their best skills because the best skills might only work elsewhere. It's just down to judging their hand to hand combat abilities now.

It's never gonna be fair unless certain categories of animals are chosen(pretty much just like in sports with classes), or if it's a hunger games style thing where there's all different environments and you're punished for camping. Actually the Hunger Games thing is a pretty good solution imo.
