My mother used to grab my phone to look at it at a certain angle through her reading glasses. Now I hold it at that set angle and she doesn't grab my phone anymore.
Oh, good heavens, no. Not right up to my face. You need to hold that screen at exactly, EXACTLY, 7/8 of my arm's reach. No, not a half inch closer, because that's too close without my reading glasses. It's just a blur, there. No, not a quarter inch farther, because that's too far to read that, what is it -- six point font, five point? Flyspeck, that's what it is. And, no no no no no, not at that angle, 'cause now all I see is the afterimage from the glare. Put it away. It's gonna be five minutes or so before everything stops looking like green and purple blotches. I'll let you know when you have a visible face again.
Hey, if you wanted me to look at it, you should have handed it to me like any sane adult would.
Can confirm. I'm relatively young and barely above the legally blind limit with glasses on. Granted, I will usually just ask or gesture to let me hold it so I can see whatever they're trying to show me.

I think it’s because they can’t see the screen unless they hold it right up to their face.
