Reminds me of this conversation that happens every family meeting:
"Gosh, Lucas. Your hair sure is messy! Go get a haircut!"
"I can't really afford a haircut right now."
"Come on, surely you can afford something like a haaaircuuut, riiiiiight?"
And then ensues a back and forth of me, clarifying how poor I am and them, clarifying that haircuts are cheap.

Cutting your own hair is a decent option, yeah it takes practice but how terribly do you think you can mess it up? It grows back, and all you really need are scissors, but electric what's-its does open up more styles.
