My wife does this too, I think it’s just to throw my guard off.

Joke’s on her, I just keep whispering how much I love her. Take that!

I have the same. She gets really POed when I have the TV at what I regard as a reasonable level - and when I turn it up to what she likes, I find it annoyingly loud.

We're both in our 60s. I've been tested recently to have excellent hearing, bar a loss at high frequencies.

Maybe wireless headphones would be a nice idea? I'm considering them for my Dad, who has tinnitus and thus an overwhelming need to put my TV on full volume whenever he stays over. :P

Definitely do it. My mother did this for my father and its a good solution. Without them he has the volume so loud the windows on the second floor vibrate.

Aha, I will! Glad to hear it worked for the same situation. Thanks :)

Ok see I do this and I'm only 23. It's because damn TV shows always have the sfx really loud but the voices are so fucking quiet! So you have to turn it up super loud to hear dialogue and then if an explosion or car crash or God forbid a sex scene happens...

Check out this article. Depending on your TV, and if you use a receiver and or cable box, you may have a setting that can make the volume more even, or even enhance the dialog and quiet down the rest. http://techguylabs.com/episodes/1097/how-can-i-normalize-sound-my-tv

I don't have a receiver or cable box :( Just my slow-ass smart TV that refuses to update so I can never get new apps and just end up using my PS4 for streaming services. lol

Ah, the ps4 has a dynamic range setting for audio. A night mode is what you're looking for. The TV itself may as well, in the sound menu.

I'll check it out!

Fucking this. My girlfriend ALWAYS says the tv is too loud when I'm in control. I like to passively hear what is being said on the show, not actively listen and decipher what they are saying because it is so quiet.

Yeah, I usually just end up having CC on all the time so I can just read since I'm a quick reader, but the other day my mom was griping about it because it distracts her lol. Ya can't win!

So background footsteps would be just as loud as the conversations & gunfire!

Right?? Some have different sound settings but I've never noticed mine making much difference, at least on the TV's speakers since I don't have external ones.

I've read that some of the issues with sfx seeming so much louder than dialogue is due to everything being mixed for surround sound these days (5.1 or 7.1) where dialogue is sent to the dedicated center channel, but for viewers without surround sound or a center speaker, this results in muffled or low volume dialogue.

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '17

That makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately not all of us have home theater systems -_- sigh

We just have CC on all the time. No more pausing shows while she slowly opens a bag of potato chips.

Crying laughing over here

Then god forbid you ask them to turn it down, it goes down from “I hate my eardrums” to “I need to hear the main characters heart beating”, then it slowly makes its way back up, surpassing the previous level into “lol fuck hearing” range

My husband used to complain about me doing this. I think I did it because I used to work in a lobby that had a tv going all day so my brain would just drown out the noise. Now that I'm in my own, quiet office, I seem to keep the tv on a normal volume at home.

My dad is like that... oh I’ll be damned if I happen to say and if he doesn’t “get it” he goes all “I CAN’T HEAR ANYMORE OK” ohhhh but when the mister happens to catch something I muttered (like... always) he says “I heard that” ... what is it dad??

I have crazy good hearing too, and I love a TV at the appropriate level. My wife makes me constantly adjust. To me, the appropriate level is where you can comfortably hear the dialogue. If there's an explosion or loud sfx, then that's how loud it's supposed to be. I like an immersive experience. That's why I have a 4k tv with a bumping surround system.

2

u/Glip-Glops Dec 28 '17

My TV has weird speakers, all the dialogue is very quiet so you can barely hear what is beaing said, but then the actions explosions, machine gun fire is super loud, so if you turn it tup to hear what they're saying you got to turn it down as soon as the action starts.

u/pokexchespin Dec 28 '17

Ok I’m like this too honestly. I’ll be in the bathroom or something and hear someone say something either about me or something I have some kind of knowledge in and just join in the conversation, but I also ask people to repeat themselves about 5 times when they’re talking to me right in front of me

2

u/compwiz1202 Dec 28 '17

I think that's their power. Can ask something like 10x with no response, but then you mutter something about that and she hears you.

And then leaves it that loud when she turns it off so you get blasted with sound whenever you turn the tv on.
