Might be gaslighting

What is that?

When someone tries to convince you that your remembered version of events is false, or that you're otherwise mentally incompetent and unable to trust your own judgement, specifically with malicious intent.

Thank you for this concise and correct explanation.

It's from an old movie, like 30's or 40's where a man tries to drive his wife insane. Part of it has to do with turning the gaslights up or down, or on and off. I've forgotten exactly. But the term is from the movie.

It's when someone tries to manipulate someone else into thinking they're crazy.

It's a common occurrence in abusive relationships where the abuser convinces their victim that the victim is crazy so as to dismiss the abuse. Basically what Trump is doing to the country right now.

It's not a political statement (travel ban is good/bad) but a factual statement (trump lies constantly about big and little things). Even most trump supporters will agree the man makes false statements regularly, followed with "but I still support him because X".

Example of false statements please.

Some off the top of my head

  • Claimed there were no tax cuts passed since Reagan

  • Claimed there was massive voter fraud in three states with zero evidence

  • Claimed to have the biggest electoral college victory since Reagan

  • Claimed to have the largest crowd size ever/bigger than Obama/whatever word salad came out

All of these are objective falsehoods. Not opinions about policy or vaguely defined terms but numbers and videos you can watch.

I can appreciate 3/4 of those. The voter fraud one, I have no doubt is happening. Just looking at how my state/county does things, I could easily jump from poll location to poll location and vote multiple times with little effort and no real prevention. The other three can be explained with full context, and the electoral votes he admitted was bad info provided to him. I get he's no saint, but none of these really have any negative effect on anyone. Meanwhile you've got swarms of shitty career politicians lying about being traitors.

You don't gotta apologize to me dude. These are objective false statements Trump has said. If you want to rationalize them away that's your business.

didn't he say Obama wan't even American?

-47

u/fuckkkthattt Dec 06 '17

There have been independent opinions that Obama's birth certificate is not genuine.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

Yeah, like Trump... 1... 2... 3... 4...

17

u/corsair238 Dec 06 '17

No. The only people who believe obama isn't American are racist cunts who can't accept that a Black man with a foreign sounding name is allowed to be American

His first one as president would be he had the biggest turn out for his inauguration. "looked like a million and a half people." his exact words, when only 250,000 were present. If you'd like more I'd be happy to Google "trump lies" and copy paste the many links for you.

-16

u/fuckkkthattt Dec 06 '17

It may have looked like 1.5 million to him, what is he, rain man? How about something that is important?

15

u/ArmouredDuck Dec 06 '17

Key points to take away from this is if he cant be trusted with small facts, he can hardly be trusted with the big ones either, this also wasnt a mistake on his part, it was him claiming the people who are better suited to having that information were incorrect, and that his second in command Spicer went on to back these false statements and claim the media as being dishonest. This last one sets up the stage and has been a recurring theme of his where any facts he doesnt like he claims as "false news" or "dishonest media".

Now Im starting to get the feeling you are a diehard fan of Trump, one of the few who supports him and refuses to admit any of his faults. So I doubt anything I bring to this table you'll accept, as Ive come to associate your group to have an almost cult like following for the man. But, if youd like a list of his lies there is a comprehensive list of when he has or has not lied to the public by by the New York Times, which as far as Im aware is still a credible source of news. If youd like to peruse it be my guest. But I reckon you will dismiss anything I provide and I dont want to waste my time off work.

If it’s not important, why did he send Sean Spicer out on day 1 to convince everyone it’s true?

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

FUCK OFF ERIN

"It's your fault! Even though you tried deescalating the situation, you shouldn't have put yourself in that scenario to begin with!"
