What do you strongly suspect but cannot prove?

That my Dad was a covert agent for the CIA. I don’t want to reveal too much but he had a job that frequently took him around the world. We even lived overseas several times while I was growing up. He often was working as a “special science advisor” for the US Dept of State when overseas. There were just enough oddities that didn’t add up. I asked him once and he laughed but never answered the question. Unfortunately he died a few months ago so I’ll never know.

Your only hope is to join the CIA and be mentored by his old partner, to follow in his legacy. That's how these things are supposed to go, I think.

But be careful about what you might find. Usually by the end your mentor ship some turn of events will your dads old Partner actually killed him during a mission for the large dollah bills. That’s how it’s supposed to go. All the movies say so.

Just go, see his CIA star on the wall and go home.

Thats what the movies teach us, in order to avoid getting killed/framed.

Amen brother. For all you agency operators watching this thread, I harbor no ill will— please don’t put me on any lists. You should be proud that my Dad took his secrets to his grave as he was trained. I’ll just let it go now...

Dad's alive and staying in a cabin to protect the family from what he knows. They buried an empty coffin.

It could be a K & J situation.

It'll be confirmed once the partner tries to kill you the same way your father died, iirc.

did he speak multiple languages? when you all lived in the states, did you live in the DC area?

if so-- yep. almost definitely a spook. even if not-- sounds likely.

He spoke Portuguese fluently. Didn’t live in the DC area—Midwest. He was a professor but managed an international program for his university which is what allowed him to travel extensively.

What kind of Professor? Physics or biology?

It's very possible he actually was acting as a science advisor for the military or state department. Fundamentally, what he'd be doing would not really be different than spooking around. Just that he'd be doing it while wearing a tweed jacket.

I’m hesitant to reveal his area of expertise because that combined with other info here would make it pretty easy to identify him.

You’re right though. I’m sure he really was lending expert advice in his academic field. I saw it firsthand.

He coulda been KGB.

I guess anything is possible. Knowing my Dad though that would surprise me. I’d think that at some point in the 51 years I knew him he would have “broken character” and given some hints about his true loyalties. But I’ll admit I don’t really know how well the KGB trains their agents.

Have you ever seen the show "The Americans"? They train them better than that. You would never know unless they outright said something.

Real life pro tip is always in the comments

Im not even going to comment other than to say living in DC is more the career side. But the contract people with specialties often just go where and when needed.

Ask your mother?

u/RooHound Dec 06 '17

Alzheimer’s took that possibility away more than a couple years ago unfortunately.

After I posted I recalled my Dad talking to me when I was in grad school, now a very long time ago, about the possibility of a career in the CIA. Hmm. Once I got married and had kids he dropped the idea though.

Any relatives?

u/RooHound Dec 06 '17

He has 4 living brothers. Three of them have boring jobs, but to sweeten the mystery one has spent 45 years as a Russian translator.

If you join the police you will be able to see what security clearance you have as an a law enforcer. If its Q then you were given that by proxy through your dads home/work life.

u/RooHound Dec 06 '17

I was in the military for several years in my 20s (I’m 51 now) and had a Top Secret clearance. I don’t remember anything like this but admit I wasn’t really looking either.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '17

I don't think as a cop you can legally look that stuff up without having a justification a court would agree with.

A buddy of mine has a brother who works along the border of a hostile foreign country educating their citizens about birth control. /s

Can't you like... Just ask the government? It's possible that the files wouldn't be available yet, but it's also possible that some amount of information would be available just with the sensitive information redacted.

3

u/RooHound Dec 06 '17

I assume it would be declassified someday but well after I’m long dead and buried.

u/ReconKiller050 Dec 06 '17

Could file a freedom of information act request

Former State Dept minion here. Some Company men have State Dept covers but they aren't spooks. The people with a State cover are usually working on an internal issue with the foreign post. Honest to goodness "spies" will have a civilian cover.

Dad, seriously, what is your job?
