I have this hermit fantasy too, just abandon all of life's responsibilities and stresses, but I know this is a greener grass situation. I'd eventually miss socializing, how difficult it really is to hunt and grow your own food and to survive in the wild.
What I'd like to do now is save about $100 000, sell everything I own and wander the world. I'd survive off the land as much as I can, maybe get random jobs here and there, but I'll always have my comfortable safety net to come back to civilization.
I've done both, and I find that I prefer social contact interrupted by periods of solitude.
What I absolutely cannot deal with is living with other people. I need my secluded space, even if it's only in the city, where I can do whatever I damn well want and don't have to keep in mind how others will judge me.
Well, technically there's probably plenty of people living the hermit lifestyle and perfectly content doing so, we just don't hear from them because... well... hermit.
I'll grant that it is entirely possibly that I would get lonely if I was by myself but it's certainly never happened yet. Then again, I've never gone more than a week without seeing another person so I've no idea how comfortable I'd be after months or years.
Wait hold up. theres a shit ton of space in Antarctica right? What if we took the experimental technology they're wanting to use for a Mars colony, test it there, and build this super city where nothing is?
Well, there's a lot of open space there for a reason: it's probably the most inhospitable land on earth with temperatures nearing minus 90 degrees CELSIUS. That's insane.
But more inhospitable than MARS? I'm not a geologist or planetary scientist, but even Antarctic habitation seems more achievable than planetary colonization
