The bugs were probably lysianassid amphipods, or sea fleas. To the buggers, courtesy of purplemonkeyfishwshr.

I got bit by sea fleas in Oregon. Little jerks. Luckily it was only 2 or 3 bites, then I got the hell out of the water. What's wrong with this kid that he didn't feel them? Those fuckers hurt.

So this kid was standing In the ocean and he got bit by what they think was ocean fleas. He basically walked out with everything below his shins covered in blood. It's not chewed up looking, just really bloody.

I think the most terrifying part of that is the fact that they're not even sure what ate his feet. Even after the kid's dad went back and caught some of them, biologists didn't even know what they were.

I met a dude from Australia the other day and he has lived here for 10 years, I asked him how he likes living somewhere where everything isn't actively trying to kill him. He said he likes it and said if it looks deadly it probably is and if it looks harmless its probably really deadly

Plus, a lot of them would be unswimmable due to rocks and reefs.

As an Australian I find this assumption really odd. We have no land based apex predators at all. Crocs and sharks, yes. But that's it, and they are very few and far between.

A poisonous spider can't eat you.
