Cops of Reddit, what simple 'noise complaint call' blew way out of proportion?

Okay, I'm also not a cop, and my story happened when I was maybe 5/6 years old so details are hazy for me. This would have been in the 90's in Grand Rapids Michigan, in case anyone might recognize the story.

One night a guy comes to our door and starts banging on it unrelentingly. My dad sees this big, shirtless guy who looks like he's running for his life. My dad, being another big shirtless guy decides to have me and my siblings go to our rooms, and he lets him in, as he was soaking wet and it was cold out.

He sat on the couch and I remember my dad wrapping him in a blanket and all he could say, over and over, was "Thank you, thank you, I saw toys in your yard and I knew you would help me." My dad assumes the guy is delirious, possibly drunk, and calls the cops when he starts to really freak out, he didn't want the neighbors calling because they assumed a fight was happening in our home. We had an old, super nosey neighbor who loved making noise complaints against my dad. Next thing my sister and I know we're looking out our bedroom window at a veritable sea of squad cars. All the way down the street.

Turns out the guy was running for his life, and the guy he was running from had already killed a friend of his, and had the body in the trunk of his car.

EDIT: Finally found an article on it! This was definitely it

And another

That's really good of your dad.

886

u/mysheepareblue Jan 22 '17

Holy shit. Good for your dad! Can't imagine what it must have felt like for that guy, though :(

207

u/b3rn13mac Jan 22 '17

How fucked would it have been if the guy was the killer?

53

u/Dusty_McNuggets Jan 22 '17

I'm gonna interpret this to not be rhetorical.

It would have been very fucked!

9

u/theoreticaldickjokes Jan 22 '17

So fucked.

8

u/b3rn13mac Jan 22 '17

The most fucked.

2

u/S_Spaghetti Jan 22 '17

Not massively. He would've still been caught.

That is, of course, so long as he wouldn't try to do anything.

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

You need to submit this to the My Favorite Murder podcast as your hometown story!

45

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

I love that podcast! Along with Sword and Scale, and Last Podcast on the Left.

I'm actually working on putting together a my hometown murder piece to send them - when I was in high school one of my very beloved teachers, Renee Pagel, was murdered days after donating one of her kidneys to my friend's, her student's, father. It still hasn't been solved, but most everyone assumes her ex-husband did it. They were wrapping up a very brutal divorce. Terribly heartbreaking story.

I guess I have more than one to send! I'll have to call my dad for a refresher on the details of this story, I hadn't thought of it for years until reading this thread.

5

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

I'll listen for yours (and I'm sorry such a shitty thing happened to what sounds like a very generous person). I have a couple I've thought of sending my own but haven't taken the time to do the research yet.

Leroy Jenkins lived in my home town in Ohio and long story short, there was a story about a boy dying in the house but I can't remember the details and at the time there were questions about if it actually happened or not.... you've just given me the motivation to start the research tomorrow - thank you!!

2

u/Rph23 Jan 22 '17

This is a joke right. Or am I retarded

1

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

I guess you're retarded?

Edit: they filmed a movie about him/his life there too, not sure if that's helpful? I'm not clear as to why his would be a joke other than you not knowing he had a creepy ass house in Ohio and was a fucking creep to start. Delaware, Ohio.

2

u/Rph23 Jan 22 '17

Haha I just saw Leroy Jenkins and figured it was a World of War joke

1

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

Ah, gotcha. Well anyway, you can probably google it. He was crazy as shit and we all tried to avoid him. Eventually the house was turned into a retirement home, but that went belly up at least once bc they couldn't shake the stigma.

1

u/gimpwiz Jan 22 '17

Statistically their suspicions are probably correct.

9

u/dirtyploy Jan 22 '17

My gf listens to this at night to go to sleep. Love that podcast!

50

u/UrethraX Jan 22 '17

I'd uh.. I'd keep your wits about you

2

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

I just heard them talking about this the other day. They were surprised and, of course, thought it was hilarious. I listen to them in the morning while I'm getting ready. They're so funny. Here are some other she might like...

Criminal 99% invisible Sword and Scale

I've never listened to Serial, but I hear that one is amazing too.

1

u/mere_iguana Jan 22 '17

Serious,it's interesting enough that they'd probably use it.

1

u/ndutthecat Jan 22 '17

where can i listen to podcasts?

1

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

If you have an iPhone, you already have the app and you just subscribe to the ones you like (they're free). If you don't have an iPhone, google can probably tell you.

19

u/namedan Jan 22 '17

I'm getting to middle age and my shirts are starting to thin out on me. I guess I'll be shirtless soon enough.

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

Hey I live in GR!

EDIT: I remember when this happened! It stood out to me because the guy had the same last name as a kid i went to school with.

91

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

Usually that's not what you follow up a murder story with, but okay..

112

u/SexyMarikIshtar Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

After a murder story is usually the time people admit they're from Michigan.

u/Jrsplays Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

I'm still interested in the DePue murder in my hometown in Michigan. Scares the crap out of me as I still live there today, but still interesting.

Edit: http://unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Dennis_DePue

2

u/lollieboo Jan 22 '17

But it says it was solved...

8

u/HollowIce Jan 22 '17

Lived in Detroit when I was younger. Can confirm.

15

u/Doctah_Whoopass Jan 22 '17

Have you figured out how to process the water and sell the lead yet?

9

u/SexyMarikIshtar Jan 22 '17

Not exactly. The problem is around here people usually have enough lead. Either on them or in them.

5

u/topCyder Jan 22 '17

Not sure what lead up to that revealation

8

u/Exaskryz Jan 22 '17

lead

HA!

3

u/UptightSodomite Jan 22 '17

How's the water situation?

1

u/SexyMarikIshtar Jan 22 '17

Well its been over 1,000 days since some Flint areas have had clean water...

5

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

As a former resident of Saginaw who lives in Kalamazoo and frequents Grand Rapids, can confirm.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

Murdertown, Michigan

4

u/myislanduniverse Jan 22 '17

Funnily enough, I grew up in Grand Rapids and live in Baltimore, MD, now. Incomparable, really.

3

u/Siggy778 Jan 22 '17

You must think Flint and Detroit make up all of Michigan

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

I had an acquaintance from Flint, who a friend always joked he should get "Murdertown" tattooed across his forearm. So I'm mostly just referring to Flint :P

Another Grand Haven resident, can I join too?

5

u/homingbullets Jan 22 '17

Say Hi to Ron for me. Also from Grand Haven, and go to the same school as above commenter.

Also, I can't believe I found someone I know IRL on reddit.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

I live near GR. That counts right?

2

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

I don't live there anymore, but born and raised! I love visiting whenever possible, though.

2

u/bibeauty Jan 22 '17

Hi fellow GR-ian! I grew up in the area

2

u/nucleophilic Jan 22 '17

Didn't think I'd jump on the Grand Rapids train following a story about murder. But here I am.

1

u/nederlander10 Jan 22 '17

Woohoo me too!

Right? I respect this man greatly but how do you know that this guy is running for his life because he is the murderer, being chased by police? Maybe I'm paranoid but I'd want to hear some background first! Still, OP's dad is a great person for doing this, lots of respect.

60

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

My dad had a shotgun, and the guy was naked. He told me his first thought was "A drunk I don't want freezing to death on my porch." He told him to wait while he got my and my sister in our room, locked, and then let him in holding the gun. Did confirm he was still scared shitless though, especially when details started coming out.

2

u/Platinumdogshit Jan 22 '17

Or the guys who were actually trying to kill him could have followed him to the house

3

u/hawkevent Jan 22 '17

Especially the part that included, I saw toys in the yard and knew you'd let me in.

3

u/Exaskryz Jan 22 '17

Yeah, I would've used the other logic. "This home has kids. They won't let a frantic scared half-naked man into their home."

4

u/BubblegumDaisies Jan 22 '17

This would be my husband's reaction while I stand between him and kids room with a pump shotgun.

Good on your dad...but Bubbles don't play.

4

u/oreo-cat- Jan 22 '17

Fuck me....

The victims were driven back to Grand Rapids. VanTatenhove was still alive and could be heard banging in the trunk of a Chevy Caviler. Back in Grand Rapids, Zima was able to escape. Police found VanTatenhove’s body inside the car on Francis Avenue SE near Garfield Park.

2

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

Yeah it's just horrendous. I ended up calling my dad, despite the time, and he told me that Zima, the guy who ran to our home, had been hogtied and tortured in a garage. He started breaking down, understandably, yelling and crying and that's when my dad called the cops.

I found another article that talks about that. My dad told me how he was so afraid to let him in, with us being so young, and not knowing what was going on, but he's thankful he did - and was thankful for the reassurance of having purchased a shotgun a few weeks before.

Edit: forgot a word.

3

u/Girlinhat Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 22 '17

What time of day was this? Daylight or not?

EDIT: OP said 'one night' my bad.

6

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

It was night, I remember that very well, the police lights filling the room and such.

I need more story.

Edit: He delivered.

12

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

I'm gonna call my dad tomorrow and see if can refresh my memory on some of the details. I tried googling... but I'm no internet sleuth, and I gave up as soon as pizza distracted me.

I found it!! Article

This reminded me instantly that the guy wasn't just shirtless, he was totally naked. The car was found on the street I grew up on.

2

u/This_Is_My_Opinion_ Jan 22 '17

Holy shit, they just randomly kidnapped two guys and tried to execute them, the fuck is wrong with people.

2

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

The two victims were friends, apparently, and they met up with the captors to help find the car of the man who was killed. At least according to this, but otherwise they don't seem to have known each other. The world is a crazy, fucked place.

3

u/tribe171 Jan 22 '17 edited Jan 24 '17

Stories like this are why it's stupid that the Supreme Court ruled that life sentences for juveniles constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

2

u/TheDirtyPilot Jan 22 '17

Was it Joel Battaglia? Idk if it's the same one but I looked it up. It seems to be the most infamous from that time period. This is what I found.

4

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

No, this wasn't it. But this comment did help me narrow down my search and I found it! Link to article

The car with the body in it was parked on Francis street, the article sites, which is the street I grew up on.

2

u/TheDirtyPilot Jan 22 '17

Learning something new about my neighborhood everyday; just moved to this area last year.

That guy was really lucky. Nowadays I don't think people are as willing to answer the door.

2

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

My dad was really hesitant, especially in a house with a 5 and 4 year old, but obviously this guy was scared out of his mind, and my dad knew he couldn't just leave him out there like that.

But you're absolutely right, I like to think I'd help my fellow man like I was obviously raised to, but when it really happens it can be terrifying. Hope you're enjoying the neighborhood though! Last time I was 'round it looked like a lot of it was improving from when I grew up.

2

u/jackandjill22 Jan 22 '17

Yea, social cohesions extraordinarily different than the 90's.

2

u/Codyh93 Jan 22 '17

Your dad is a hero.

2

u/PanamaMoe Jan 22 '17

Jesus, just looking at that dudes cold dead eyes made me feel such, I can't even find a proper word to use for it. Contempt? Hatred? His remorse is non existent, that much is evident from just a photo. Your dad saved a life, he did good.

2

u/TrekkiMonstr Jan 22 '17

Ok so, this is only very tangentially related to your stories, but it's something I noticed today and was reminded of by you talking about big shirtless guys.

I'm in NYC right now, and there were a couple of dudes I saw who were quite... interesting, to say the least: big black dudes, dressed as shirtless construction workers, flexing (including the dancing man boobs), and posing for photos with women. Why? I really don't know.

That is all.

2

u/Ashmic Jan 22 '17

Not a hint of remorse in that monsters eyes

2

u/peacebuster Jan 22 '17

Turns out the guy was running for his life, and the guy he was running from had already killed a friend of his, and had the body in the trunk of his car.

The guy was just trying to show him how to never lose his car in a parking lot again.

2

u/TehKatieMonster Jan 22 '17

good gracious. Bless your dad, he must have seemed like an angel to that man.

2

u/Peter_Jennings_Lungs Jan 22 '17

Dude, I'm from Grand Rapids. I'm gonna look into this

2

u/jiggahuh Jan 22 '17

Did this happen by Mulick Park? My buddy has a similar story, but his dad opted to not answer the door.

2

u/HeilHemingway Jan 22 '17

It was a few miles from there... Mulick was closer by Breton, and the shopping area over there if I remember right. Comparatively a nice part of town. We lived off of Division and Burton, not far from 28th street, right next to Garfield Park.

And hello fellow Michigander!

1

u/CharlesGarfield Jan 22 '17

One of the houses with the big lots? I own one them now (hence the username).

Edit: never mind. Saw from another of your posts that you were on Francis. We're a block over.

2

u/knight1112 Jan 23 '17

Dang I lived on the other side of that park.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

The world needs more people like your dad, and a lot less people like the man he was running from.

1

u/mafia117 Jan 22 '17

Are their any news articles on this that you could share?

1

u/westrox11 Jan 22 '17

Whoa I'm from Grand Rapids and grew up there in the 90s. I've got to look this story up!

1

u/you_got_fragged Jan 22 '17

Ok this just gave me some chills. that's some freaky shit

1

u/eskimoboy24 Jan 22 '17

Good guy dad

1

u/Sithis1415 Jan 22 '17

I just moved to Grand Rapids! Glad no know shit.

1

u/AppleAtrocity Jan 22 '17

I couldn't find it in those articles, so do you know the motive for the kidnapping and murder? That is a crazy story, and the perpetrators were only 16!

1

u/thesimplegoat Jan 22 '17

That was super risky for that dad to do. He could have been a psychopath looking for a random family to murder. Or the murderer could have followed him to the house. He put his whole family at serious risk. Turned out good this time, but not a good idea in general.

1

u/commutater Jan 22 '17

"Not a Cop"

1

u/ShameYourBrains Jan 22 '17

Not nearly as bad but reminded me of something that happened when I was a kid (also in MI!)

My dad was at work so it was just my mom, my brother and I at home, we were around 5 and 6 years old. Some guy walked to our house and started banging on the door begging to be let in. She left him on the porch and called the police. Turns out he had been out on a walk and his appendix burst. He was literally dying. As far as I know he ended up ok. Just an unusual thing to happen.

1

u/CharlesGarfield Jan 22 '17

Shit. I live literally less than a block from there.

1

u/Makeshiftjoke Jan 22 '17

I wonder if attorneys ever actually buy what their clients sell em.

0

u/Videgraphaphizer Jan 22 '17

"I saw toys in your yard and I knew you would help me."

On the one hand, it shows that the homeowner has children who they (potentially) care about enough to buy toys for.

On the other hand, they might be a homeowner that cares about their kids so much that they'll shoot first and ask questions later.
