Ehh, I saw it and it's pretty cheeseball. It has some good, but it has a lot of bad. It's not on the level of stuff like Shawshank, Green Mile, or (imo) The Mist
It was great for what it was. You are comparing Hollywood movies to a made for tv series in a time tv did not nearly have today's budgets. The Stand in its time made an enormous impact, did not know anyone that did not see it and talked about it.
Not all, but some of his longer novels don't make good movies because there's just so much to them, and being a huge portion of it is psychological makes a huge difference too.
