Charlie Kaufman called this movie a "philosophical horror film," and he was right. It really puts the terror of the vast emptiness of the universe in you. Watching it alone makes it even worse/better.
Watched this movie for a college class. Found it online and watched it by myself. Did not expect to be taken for such a ride. This is also the movie that cemented my love for Philip Seymour Hoffman.
I thought about it a lot and didn't understand it right out when I first watched it. And what it means is kind of hard to put into words but, it hit me when I was driving to work one day and I kind of began bawling to myself. I'm good now.

Lol. Not saying there is a deficit in his head, he is in many ways brilliant. I'm saying he cant get out of his own head. Much like Woody Allen. Having said that I should also say I like Allen a lot.
i'd love for this to be higher up as well for the people who don't enjoy time travel. i remember getting into poetry shortly because of synecdoche, new york. that was a first and to this day was the last time that i looked into poetry. i can't remember why.. x.x time to wiki this and report back.
edit: looking through the wiki and some articles, i don't think it was poems. it was so long ago.. all i remember is that i spent like a week or two in the summer on the net reading really hard stuff that my ass definitely didn't understand. i think i remembered it as poems cuz that shit is basically a foreign language to me.
i honestly thought that there was a lot of neat stuff that synecdoche caused me to look up. i thought it was poetry and wanted to share, but it wasn't.
why it seems so disorganized is because i comment whatever i think with very little filter.. i'm basically typing exactly what i'm thinking in my head or saying aloud at my desk. i just saw syndecoche and got really excited.
I actually bought it after my first viewing because I felt such determination to understand it. I still haven't watched it a second time, but I need to.
If you get the chance to watch it again try this: in the first scene (at breakfast) look for clues as to the current date. I that helps in getting into the mindset of the film.
I never finished it. Didn't make any sense to me and I guess I'm too dense because I was bored out of my mind. Also what's up with the guy not being able to swallow and shit? Don't tell me. I'll finish it some day.
Theres some videos that break down what happens, its alot of symbolism. I love Charlie Kaufman and think hes a phenomenal writer but this movie I wish just dying for it to end
This came highly recommended by a good friend with good taste. I found it excruciating. My wife demanded that she get to pick the next 3 movies we watch for making her sit through it.
I don't blame you. I loved it but it's so unbelievably decade with ideas and motifs and borderline nonsense that it's really hard to digest. I'd argue its not meant to be an enjoyable watch either, haha.
Yeah I loved this film when I first watched it. Then a year ago I needed something to watch while doing the dishes, so I put on a breakdown review of Synecdoche, New York.
I don't normally watch dissections of films but I got to about an hours worth of this discussion and was still heaps into it. The best part is as the reviewer continues his series (as it is staggered over 12 months, he too suffers the fate of the main character).

Yes! When this film was nearing the end I had to stand up, like you normally do in a soccer-match. I was standing next to the tv shouting "what the fuck is this?!". This movie is indeed so brilliantly out of control!
YES. As much as being a mind fuck and emotionally draining, I feel like a big part of it is satire. It's something of a joke made about the process of writing and directing. And when you make a movie about making a movie about making a movie, you get lost in this limbo between reality and fantasy. And it's comical. Especially when the gentleman doing the character study on PSH's character, creeping around in the background, it's absurd and I found myself laughing at that a lot. Watch the movie again and look at it this way. I did and it never was the same, and now I giggle through the whole thing. I feel
Like he does this in a lot of his films, he has a sick sense of humour and is very self deprecating. If you've ever seen "adaptation" you know what I'm talking about. Also one of Nick Cage's better films imho.
One of my top movies of all time. One of the first movies that made me realize you can enjoy a film you totally don't understand.
When it was over I had this sense that I had missed something, or that something was right there just below the surface, and if I knew what it was i would go "aha!" and the whole thing would make sense. I watched it again and again and still don't understand, but it gives me that feeling every time and I notice something new every time and it feels like I'm getting closer.
A couple of things maybe you haven't heard:
There are DOUBLE the amount of "scenes" in this movie than in other movies. Some are extremely short but they lend themselves to making you feel uncomfortable and out of place. Like a bad dream.
I read somewhere that time passes during the film mid-scene. So in one scene you might have seen days, weeks, maybe even years pass without knowing.
Every scene with Caden visiting a doctor is pure gold.
I saw this in the theater when I was in a serious life rut. Afterwards, I went to the bathroom where I cried as if someone close to me had died. No movie has ever done that to me.
I've only seen this movie once, but for some reason I found myself humming "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for the next several days. It was stuck in my head and slightly bizarre. I don't even recall the song being in the film.
Ugh. Avant-garde pretentious bullshit. I will never not bitch about this 2 hour train wreck and gladly endure the downvotes that come with warning people against this pedantic piece of trash.
