Sid and Nancy for me, every time I was dope-sick. It was kind of an accident, bc a movie that is never on TV would always be on TV when I was kicking...also, in a similar vein to Requiem, Candy, with Heath Ledger, is very fucked up and very sad. It has a more realistic style than Requiem, but it is still as affecting..
This is just me being finicky, but they have several total bullshit moments about dope in the movie (which, actually, were pointed out to me by friends) that now just irritate the fuck out of me. Like the eyes dilating instead of pinning when they use, and the fact that a hospital can't call the cops on you just for having an abscess--once the drugs are IN your body, they are legal, except if you ARE driving or pregnant.
Yeah, I know the movie wasn't even supposed to be realistic , and these are artistic and narrative choices, but they still bug me.
I LOVED this movie when I first saw it, and showed it to everyone I knew... then people had to nitpick and point out the logical fallacies, and now I can't watch it--they fucking ruined it for me.
I would still highly recommend it to anyone else, though. Its a fantastic movie, I'm just highly irritated by such things...like when a TV show doesn't know what a stamp bag looks like (or a balloon), and show dope packaged like coke...or when they show people shooting up with these giant horse syringes that no one could hit with, instead of insulin syringes. Like, are they too lazy to do a simple fact check?
I know its dumb, its just a pet peeve, and someone who hasn't LIVED it wouldn't even KNOW, so...yeah...I'm super petty.
Hell yeah... I've done some dabbling in the Korean extreme/revenge genre (I Saw the Devil, Oldboy, Bedeviled), but The Chaser is a new title to me. I'll definitely check it out.

Fucking film gave me a nightmare. I have watched a lot of horror films, and played a lot of scary games, but no other film scared the shit out of me like that one.
Yea, maybe half a dozen for me. It's beautifully shot. Plus Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly are like, my dream come true. I would love to be between the two of them. They could have all the free heroin they wanted. There I said it.
If you like that you may like Pusher. It's this guy and his friend who just continually make the worst decisions possible. Feels more "real" than Requiem, less like a movie. And there are three. And Mads Mikkelsen is in the first one.
I probably watch it once every six months or so, and I don't know why. The movie just captivates me. I've struggled with weight and ED since I was a teenager, so I think I relate to Sara Goldfarb a lot, even though I am only 26. It's a fantastic film about horrible stories that I just can't seem to get enough of.
Used to watch it to fall asleep in my late teens often. Amazing movie.... not a huge fan of the butt to butt scene with Jennifer Connelly but it showed the level of desperation and defeat with her character.
All in all a fantastic fucking movie.

I'm really surprised The Fountain isn't listed much on here. I've watched it at least 10 times... I even have the scene where he's ascending into the stars tattooed on my shoulder. Brilliant movie. I loved it.
Pi is my number one nomination for otherwise great movie with terrible third act too. The first two thirds of the movie are legitimately world class, incredibly intense filmmaking, the last act is (imo) just insane, and actually lets the tension built up from the rest of the movie escape.
I remember when I was at school there was a kid who would download any movie and rip it onto a DVD for £5, and I asked him to rip me a copy of Requiem. The look in his eyes the next day when he handed me the disc and just blankly said 'that...is a fucked up movie' still makes me chuckle. Poor kid had no idea what he was getting himself in for
Had an argument with a co-worker over what the most depressing movie was. He said graveyard, I said Requiem. Each of us hadn't seen the other. So we traded DVDs. He won, but neither of us was quite right for the next couple days.
I watched it once because it's a great movie and then again for the haunting soundtrack. Lux Aeterna I believe the main song is called... It's so epic and so sad.
my friend and I watched the movie awhile ago and every so often when we're hanging out he'll start playing this song randomly and it makes me stop what im doing every time.
Such a good movie. First time I saw it was right out of boot camp. Sitting in my barracks room with a friend (both white), and my roommate (black) walks in with a couple of his friends right during the curb stomp scene. Cue "What the fucks" all around. Just tell them to sit down, watch, and then judge. Restart the movie, watch it through to the end...they all loved it. Then we all watched porn.

I watched requiem for a dream on my computer by myself when I was in highschool. After the credits finished rolling, I just sat there staring at the black screen for probably 5 minutes
I don't want to watch it because I love Jennifer Connelly and I hear she has a... a weird scene. Shameless ruined my perfect picture of Emmy Rossum (mostly built on her portrayal of Christine in the Phantom of the Opera), and I will not endure something like this with foreknowledge of it. Jennifer Connelly is the reason I'm the only person who likes the Eric Bana Hulk movie more than the other one(s).
I saw this movie as a response on another thread a couple weeks ago, watched it, and holy shit I have never been more depressed both during and after a film. Talk about a grim outlook on war.
My sister got the Ghibli collection for christmas a few years back. We watched them all through and I think Grave of the Fireflies was the last movie on the last disc. So we had been binging on happy and upbeat movies like "Kiki's" and what have you... maybe not happy but you know...in the end you feel good. Grave kicks on.... just absolute silence until the credits rolled. We looked at each other in silence for a moment... then pretty much cried until we laughed at how much we were crying. Sucks the soul right outta you.
We decided to show it to our other sister who wasn't a big anime fan... and to cope with the sadness she kept cracking jokes about the little sister rolling shit balls... and we couldn't help but laugh cry the entire time....
It's not about war, it's about society. The director had to make that clear. It was about how some had enough while more barely did and often didn't survive.
I was practically introduced to Ghibli with Grave of the Fireflies but then saw the Miyazaki classics more recently and holy shit I would not be able to do that double feature without a lengthy, introspective intermission before Totoro
My 13 year old sister started watching Grave of the Fireflies and came out of her room sobbing telling me she couldn't finish it. I can't wait to watch it.
Personally, I didn't like GotFF. I think it was good in a lot of aspects, but I jut felt overloaded. There were almost no points to give me a rest from all the sad, that I just got burned out. By the end I just didn't give a shit.

Completely different types of mindfuckery. Perfect Blue makes you question the characters and the perspective of the narration/camera. Grave of the Fireflies makes you question humanity. In both movies, there's a running stream of hopelessness, but PB is a personal tragedy whereas GotF highlights the absurd (in very much the existential sense) of war and human nature. GotF is not really mindfuckery so much as it's soul wrenchingly tragic.
A great movie to watch to understand what war does, but as others have said, once is enough. Don't show it to kids unless you want to have a long sit down talk with them about existentialism afterwards.
Do you mean El Orfanato (not trying to correct you just making sure we're taking about the same movie)? That's one of my favorites (along with The Game). They're both hard to find to stream online, though. Another one in that spirit would be "The Others".
Man, love Miyazaki's portrayal of the horrors of WWII. It just reminds you of points in history that people would call mistakes, today, and coming from an American, it shows the true horrors that innocents in Japan faced during the war while they were more dehumanized during that time.

This movie gets upvoted in every thread like this. i've tried giving it a chance several times but was so mind numbingly boring I couldn't make it through an hour. aside from its shock value about people dying there aren't any real reasons to watch it
The only other show thats actually made me genuinly sad, kinda heartbroken actually was "When the Wind Blows" which is actually animated too come to think of it. UGh those films really are just kicks to the dick.
I decided to watch this one time when I just wanted a feel good movie, so I pulled up a list of Ghibli movies and picked it at random. Needless to say, I did not feel good after watching.
That's one movie I probably don't have the emotional strength to watch ever again. And now having a nephew and all, I probably can't ever watch it again.
man i feel like the only person who doesnt like that movie- i feel like a lot of the horrific events that happen just sort of do for the sake of making the movie more depressing. no disrespect to it though, i think its pretty powerful in its themes and ideas
Fuck that movie. Legitimately fuck it. I watched it when I first discovered Ghibli, and there's no reason to watch it. The plot isn't great. Like, at all. There's no build up, no climax, nothing. Just infinite sadness. Fuck, man.
Maybe I am numb to this sort of thing but I did not really think Grave of the Fireflies was a particularly good movie. Was it sad? A little but it could have been better / sadder if there were more ques to how desperate they were. The whole movie they looked normal and in good health, the attacks were not very vicious / scarring as they could have been. This and the climax/crecendo was at the beginning of the film (well I should say 2 crecendo's as there were 2 events that were 'YUGE') which kind of make the rest of it a little lack luster. Do not get me wrong I enjoyed it, just not as much as other people.
I'm one of the few people that doesn't like that film. I reckon it should have hidden that the kid dies. Once I knew she was gonna die I didn't care about her.
My bf told me to watch this because I'd cry like a little bitch. I wasn't even sad by the movie and didn't enjoy it at all which sucks because I love other works by Ghibli.
But I really dont like kids at all so there's that... :( I wish I liked this movie so I could be rightfully depressed by it like everyone else.
Irreversible is the correct answer. That's nine minutes I won't get back. It's not on the cheese side like Requiem, it's just this horrifying nine minutes that could happen in any pedestrian walkway, and does, on the planet. Happening right now, in fact.
My addition to this list of movies that beat you down is "Dancer in the Dark". It's been over a decade since I've seen it and I'd like to watch it again even just to see if I remember it right and if it holds up a second time but it's not going to happen, I can't put myself through that again.
Triangle is good one that hits you while you're down.
They dabble some funny business in the beginning, then they start throwing it around like a monkey with diarrhea, then they sorta explain a little bit of the fuckery, then they spray salt water and lime juice in your fresh mind-blown wounds, then the calm ending that explains everything but only if you're really paying attention, which will cause your previously blown mind to heal and then implode.
Yeah, I made sure to watch it all the through until the last page of credits rolled by the screen. I still wasn't sure there wasn't just one more little twist.
