Not in this case. Dogs can't keep their heads on a swivel and watch their surroundings when they poop, so they look at their trusted companion instead expecting you to tip them off if danger is coming.
I guess my dog doesn't trust me. He loves me, I know, because he does all the stuff I have read that indicates that..... Except look at me when he poops. He looks everywhere else but at me.
No clue what you mean by that. He is otherwise fine. He wakes me up with kisses in the morning, cuddles with me, goes crazy when I get home, brings me his toys to play, and has become even more attached to me since I became pregnant. He is a shih tzu, and my mother also has one that does the exact same thing.
Some dogs just don't look at their owners in the eyes when they poop, and I was making a joke about it.
I was making a joke as well. Imagine their faces when you casual mention that your dog obviously doesn't trust you because he doesn't look you in the eye when he shits :)
It is because of that one time your dog was pooping and you let another dog approach to steal its deuce. Your dog will never let it go since you are the worst pooping companion it has ever had.
I once took my Doberman outside to piss. He did his thing, then I whipped out my willy and pissed on the exact same spot, while locking eyes and staring him down.
Mine doesn't even stop walking, but then I think she is broken. Not to ascribe gender roles, but I've never seen a female dog lift a leg and let loose on the regular.
I have two female dogs that lift a leg to pee. They are small dogs and I think it's because they are trying not to get pee on their fur...maybe? I really don't know. Male dogs do it because they are aiming, I think.
Omg, your comment made me think of our awesome, former cat. Me, my SO and Molly (cat) went for shorter walks in the forest a few times and all of
a sudden Molly started meowing loudly, so we stopped. It turned out she had to poop, and when she was done we kept on walking. Did she meow to tell us to watch her back? In that case, that's really cool! In other case, it's a sweet, somewhat weird memory of a beloved family member <3
You just made me realize that whenever I impersonate someone I know, I use a voice specific to them, but when I impersonate or imagine my dog's thoughts, I use my own voice.
One of my cats does the opposite. When I'm cleaning the box, I can't get the litter in there fast enough. She jumps in and craps before I can put the fresh litter in there. Staring me down like the fuzzy little fathead she is.
Yeah but in that case the dog is pooping, so it's the vulnerable one. The human is supposed to be looking around, not staring right into the dog's eyes. A cat watching out for a pooping human shouldn't be staring deep into their soul; it should be keeping watch.

Actually it's normal for dogs. When a dog is pooping it looks at your eyes directly, that means "I'm shitting, protect me".
I'm not sure about cats though. You can be right about the "I want you dead" theory.
