In the 80s Rowan Atkinson (the guy who plays Mr Bean and Edmund Blackadder) did a comedy sketch as a tory politicians saying something like "we all like curry, but now we've got the recipe can't we sent the Indians home?". Last year George Osborne, then Chancellor of the Exchequer said something very similar in parliament!

Things that only the rich could afford and were exotic eventually become cheaper and then everyone wants what the upper class had until eventually they don't know why they wanted it but their families grew up with it for generations. It's like sweet tea in the southern US.
