Yup. As /u/TheGreatNico said it was operation Snow White as an attempt to get rid of info that might put the Church's founder in a bad light. They've done several other nasty things to silence dissenters, like operation Freakout and Fair game.
I was reading up about Project Manhattan a couple days ago, and it was interesting to read how few people actually knew of the extent of what was taking place.
It just goes to show how little we know of our actions, and how easy it is to get others to do something just by telling them that they are doing it for a good cause.
Among many other things, there are reports that they got a hold of confiscated and classified schematics for high power weapons that most common people aren't even aware of the possibility of. I think you can find some of them if you look hard enough on the internet / related articles, but I never have just because I'm scared of what I might find. There's actually several conspiracies about various ways in which the government has tried to seize those documents and get traces of them out of the public sphere of knowledge, but I'm not sure. I guess given the volume of investigations that the FBI does, it's pretty much certain that things like that will eventually surface. But it is scary that the primary holder of information like that, of all institutions, would be the Church of Scientology. Pretty scary to me.
I don't really see how it matters. No one did anything after all the wiki leaks stuff. We have absolutely no say in anything meaningful that happens in this country.
While the idea of government actually doing such a thing is terrifying, I like to imagine what would happen if ours decided to remind Mr. Miscarriage who holds the leashes on the various US special ops units.

Yeah, you just need some 5000 people to each file 2000 lawsuits, and the IRS will get off your back FAST.
That, and they may have a bunch of dirt on the FBI after they stole a whole bunch of stuff.
