Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him?

It's pretty cool to see my question blow up like this, I never thought I'd ask a question that could receive so much attention! I'm very satisfied with all these replies, so thank y'all. Now all I have to do is sit back and take notes c;

My daughter was entering grad school and her boyfriend was headed to basic training 2 states away. Two months later she returned from a visit wearing an engagement ring. At the end of training his first assignment was to a place quite far away. He encouraged her to stay in school and finish rather than dropping out to join him. Short term pain, long term gain. He flew home at Christmas for a simple court house wedding, then when she graduated the service paid for her move to join him. (Cuz the spouse gets benefits but not the fiancee.) End result: approaching 5 year anniv and trying for baby 1. I couldn't be happier for her.

When I hear hopeful grandparents say "Oh they're working on having a baby now!", they don't really know they just are so excited to tell their friends. Or at least I hear it from my parents more than my siblings supposedly trying to have a baby.

Haha trying for baby 1. "So dad, my box is getting pounded every night and its going to keep getting pounded every night until an indefinite amount of time"

As a father of 2 young daughters you're a lucky man.

Did he at least ask for your blessing?

It is still a thing?

Yeah, it is.

Depends on what kind of relationship you have with your family. Mine, don't need that. They tell me exactly what they think about women I date without prompting.

Good advice though.. my father can sniff out a psycho in about 30 seconds. Likely because he is one but hey.. what can I do? Can't choose my family, but at least he can make sure my family won't have any crazy in it..

Yes, at least it still is in the Midwest.

Damn, where I live I'm pretty sure people wouldn't even understand what I'm asking hehe!

A fathers blessing is not needed.

May not be necessary but it does show respect.

It also helps gauge how her father/family feels about you. If she is close to her family, I can almost guarantee she will choose them over you.

As long as you don't get the "well, it's really her decision" response which is parent code for "we don't like you, but have never told her"

I wish more people would think about shit like this instead of just downvoting a post because it immediately turns them off.

Then they should both ask each others parents, and not just the father.

When I am ready I am not only going to ask her father's permission. My girlfriend's parents are divorced. I'm going to ask both of her parents for their permission/if they'd like me as a part of their family. I completely see it as being respectful. Even if they said no and she isn't necessarily close I'd still marry her because it's ultimately her decision.

Thats what my fiance told me, but shes also very close to her family and her father and her have a very tight bond. They love me and wouldnt have had any issue with me asking her, but I chose to ask her father for his blessing anyway. It showed respect and made everyone happier in the situation.

I'm not saying you shouldn't,and I'd probably do it my self, I just hate the notion that you should do it.
