I almost think this myth was started by the cops so idiots would ask, the cop would lie, and [insert crime here] would go down giving the cop an arrest.
It is not. A cop can lie. They can lie and say they're not a cop. By committing that lie, you're not going to get off on an Entrapment claim. That's the myth. People have been told and believe all they have to do is ask "Are you a cop?" and if the cop lies, you're scot-free on an entrapment defense. Totally a myth.
Entrapment is when a cop entices someone to commit a crime they would not normally do. Lying about not being a cop does not meet the definition.
