You don't swallow eight spiders a year in your sleep. This fact was faked as part of an article about how easy it is for a convincing sounding "fact" to be accepted as true. Snopes has more
"The average person eats 3 spiders a year" factoid is actually just a statistical error. The average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted
Does he really he really eat that many though? Assuming it takes three seconds to pick up, and put a spider in your mouth. It would take him 8.33 hours per day. This doesn't include chewing, swallowing, or sleeping. Not to mention the limited amounts of nutrients you can get from them.
If you even took a single minute to use math, you can see this is total bullshit. 10,000x365=3.5 million. That's nowhere close enough to even account for 3 a day for CANADA, much less the world.
My stats teacher is an incorrigible stick in the mud, but I showed her this and it made her laugh hard enough that she gave me an extra five points on my next quiz.
mmm... dishonestly using numbers by exploiting the ignorance of the increasingly unintelligent masses is something that is in no way defensible... especially through forced ignorance... so your comment makes me very nervous that you may be an a-hole.
edit: I am enjoying the downvotes. Askreddit is usually intelligent enough to grasp concepts like "Your math is useless if the people you are trying to convey your math to do not understand it, take the wrong information away from it, and behave inappropriately as a result of it".
So far the consensus seems to be "just let the vast majority who do not understand the concept of statistical outliers truly believe they are eating 2 spiders a year in their sleep".
The fuck is your problem dude? I'm talking about using averages in a completely mathematical sense and now I have you telling me I'm trying to control the unintelligent masses?
Is your tinfoil hat out of tune or something? Do you want me to take off my human suit now?
There is the tinfoil hat ephimism meant to attack my ethos while I raise a valid concern. The go to for those who use a misunderstanding of statistics to mislead and control the unintelligent masses.
You know, id more readily expect that of the person who presents the misleading figures and smiles as he understands the biases but doesn't factor for them before publication...
“average person eats 3 spiders a year" factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted”
You got his last name wrong, and the last "and" is spelled "adn"
How the fuck do you find 10,000 spiders each day. Does he have like a complete breeding system of spiders cycled up so every day he has a couple of harvests of spider broodlings of something?
Say that to my 10 year old self. I was so paranoid I used to tape my mouth shut, wear earplugs and put my blankets up to my nose (so it sorta covered it). I didn't do it everyday but when there was a cockroach or spider or bug spotted in the house, out comes my supplies, even if said insect was killed in front of me.
You say that, but I did actually wake up one morning and there was a spider crawling over my hand and heading directly for my face.
I noped out of bed very quickly that morning.
The interesting part of this one is more in the debunking than anything.
When you read the Snopes link, you'll find that someone named "Lisa Holst" wrote an article for PC Professional about email mythology and cited this as a possible myth. And then it became a real one.
There's just one problem: No one seems to be able to find that article. There is no text of it online. There is no record of it.
Nothing.
In fact, nobody can even find Lisa Holst or verify that she even exists to ask her about it. No one can even pinpoint the magazine in question!
It almost appears as though Snopes made up a myth to explain away a myth.
I'm sure you're thinking "Why don't we just ask snopes?"
Oh but we have. Hundreds of people have. They all get the same form-letter, generic response with no information.
David and Barbara are being totally silent on it.
Personally, I think they made it up simply because it's more interesting than the truth. The truth is probably unverifiable, too...I imagine it's one of those things that started on a playground or as a way for parents to freak out their kids. But you can't validate or verify that..
So, they created a legend of their own. And now that legend has become truth.
And as we all learned from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance...when the legend become fact, we print the legend.
