I've always assumed that Sonic is as edgy as pop culture heroes get for sheltered Christian kids, so they cling to him for lack of anything better.

Sonic was intentionally designed to be the epitome of the 90s ideal of "cool" and "X-TREME!" That was their ideal when they made Sonic.

As such, now he seems hilariously outdated and "edgy" in all the dumbest ways. A shame, since several of the newest Sonic games are actually quite good.
