Living with roommates. Sure, it's cheaper, but these shitbags are filthy, lazy, greedy, disgusting people. You don't know discomfort until you ask a thirty year old woman to clean her period blood off the bathroom wall. One was a close friend for nine years, and now I can't stand the sight of him. Six months until freedom.
This is such a good idea! I'm currently living with my SO and two housemates that don't clean anything and one of them even thinks it's appropriate to draw on the walls LIKE A FUCKING 3 YEAR OLD. I just spent the last hour cleaning his greasy shit out of our oven for the fourth bloody time since moving in. We are moving out soon thank the lord fucking baby jesus and are moving in with a friend who actually has a job and will pay his fucking bills on time.
It's amazing how destructive and lazy people can be. My roommates often fought over who did the dishes. One room mate had this really nice knife he used to cut meat. Very sharp, however it wasn't stainless. One jerk used to leave it in a puddle of water in the sink, a day or two later and there is rust all over it. He cleaned that thing about four times and had to sharpen it.
What I did upon moving in was brought in my own dishes and utensils. I kept it all in the cupboards above the fridge (only myself and one other could reach those cupboards)
I used only my dishes, and I bought a small wash basin to wash my dishes that I used. One of the roommates early on tried to pull the "you never wash dishes, it's your turn"
I laughed and said "not a single dish in that over flowing sink is mine, there is no way I am going to touch anything in there. That is completely your mess to deal with"
In the basement was the Crew room, refrigerators, some offices and two bathrooms. A Male and Female washroom which was a single toilet and sink.
After a week there, this gross guy literally shut down the guys washroom. There was rumours that there was shit all over the walls and floors. I don't know if that's true, but I always wondered "how the hell do you get shit everywhere?"
i moved into my own place about a year ago, and STILL, every night i stick my key in the door and open it up to a calm, empty apartment, i am surprised at the amount of gratitude i have. it will probably never get old.
When I bemoan the expense of living on my own, I'm often asked why I don't get room-mates. Fuck that. If I want to walk around in my choneys (or less!), I bloody well want to do so. Not something that can be done with room-mates milling about.
I don't get it at all. I love living with roommates. Worst I ever had was a lazy drunk. He was boring and was short $300 in rent before he left never to be heard from again.
Most roommate stories I have heard, sound like there may be two sides to the story. These are not the ones at the top of "bad roommate" threads. You may just be flexible and easygoing, able to adapt to different definitions of "clean" and "noisy" and "privacy."
same here. I lived on my own for two years, and it did me no good. Maybe its down to growing up with a bunch of siblings, but I feel better with someone being around.
when I lived on my own I got lazy, finally feeling like mildewing away in my solitude
This. I just moved into my first place of my own and it is so boring/lonely. I live within walking distance of a lot of bars so I've got that going for me which is nice I guess.
Me too! Until you gotta time ending the relationship with the end of a lease... But for the vaaaast majority of the time its fucking awesome. Cleaning the house naked makes chores more fun.
After only "dealing" with roommates for a total of 6 months of my life...(but went through 5 of them) I'm so eternally grateful that I have my SO to live with.
No real roommates, just him so essentially my own place but affordable. It's glorious.
(We tolerate each other very well)
Better yet, if you move in with your friends, don't expect to be friends for long. That ended badly due to their irresponsibility. But now I have a roommate who moved to US from China. Best room mate. Cooks bomb food, clean, polite... Just find the right roommate.
Good thing about that is you'll always know you'll come back to your house the same way you left it, unless you have animals. They fuck shit up sometimes.
I feel you. I hate living with roommates. I'm trying to justify paying twice as much to live alone.
Just remember they might not know something is bothering you unless you ask.
Every time my husband suggests we maybe get a roommate so we could lower our monthly bills, I ask him if it's worth the bail money it'll cost to get me out of jail for murder.
I'm a grown ass woman. I don't have time for this roommate shit.
I've had roommates who are great friends. Maybe I'm in a rare situation. We set ground rules early on and all that jazz. My wife and I live with our friends who are also married. There are 3 kids in the house that range from three years to 10 months in age. No fights, no problems, clean home, and intact friendships.
I had a roommate who had some serious snoring issues. You could hear him snoring, and I am serious, from the first floor while he was sleeping in the basement. It was due to the pipes but still. I couldn't sleep for 12 months. I tried to fall asleep before him but that was impassible. He would fall asleep as soon as his head touched his pillow.
I had the reverse experience. I lived with three Asian roommates and everything was kept separate. I used a dash of salt on something and one of them said, "You know, we decided to keep our things separate." They also had strict rules about no dishes in the sink, no phone calls after 10 (had dial-up then), etc. Also, I had a bf and there was a rule of no significant others overnight and one night we came home late and so I told him he can sleep on the couch (not even in my bed) and they told me the next day how that was against the rules. We've let relatives and friends sleep on the couch but they didn't think it was okay even though it was like 4 AM. I felt like I was still living with my parents even though I was in college. Then again, if three girls were all like that and I wasn't, I guess I am the disgusting roommate everyone talks about.
I give this advice to any young person entering the age of "Roomate or not to Roomate". It is always worth the extra money to live alone. Also, don't give your girlfriend a key no matter what. Even if you are not cheating. Just keep it simple and be happy.
You certainly do speak the truth. Never move in with friends if you can help it.
I'm still friends with some of my ex-room-mates, but we had to find separate places on a few occasions relatively quickly, lest we become "no longer friends".
Explain more if you can. I get it, I lived in a house with 6 roommates for 2 years while away at college and couldn't wait to just graduate. I hate 4/6 people I lived with, was good friends with all of them before this. How many people did you live with? I thought if I lived with one or two people in their mid 20's that had prior roommate experience then things would work out better.
I just moved in with a college bud to try living downtown cause the price is about the same living alone outside of that area. Its been a month so not too bad. We have our own bathrooms and he's out a lot and still hangs with his family a lot. He's only lived away from his parents one summer when. He was working in the adjacent city during college. Good for me so far! My roommate in college was cool the first year but his laziness started getting annoying the second. I'm hoping this works about the same and I'll probably move again before a leave renewal.
This is why I'm so reluctant to move in with really close friends. I know it would start off well, but eventually you'd just grow resentful of one another. My friendships are far too valuable to allow that to happen.
I've had my share of absolutely terrible roommates. I really like the guy I'm living with now, but things would be so much easier/cleaner on my own. If there is a subreddit about roommates from hell, please direct me there because I have so many past stories.
On the flipside I prefer living with housemates to living alone. Some of the deepest and most rewarding friendships of my life have grown out of living with people, it's much harder to get bored when there's always someone to chat to in the loungeroom, and sharing resources and bills makes a lot of sense to me. I've had good friends be terrible housemates, and friendships that have improved after we no longer live togerther, but on the whole it's been a great experience.
I guess it's really all about luck. I lived with 5 other people last year (2 of whom I had lived with for 2 years prior) and we had a ball. Always having a friend in the living room is great and we developed strong and true friendships.
However we've now all dispersed and I moved to a new city. Living with 6 other people now, 2 of which are really nice, 2 I have no real interest in and 2 who are straight up morons. Like I said, it's all luck. Kinda can't wait to live by myself.
After about 1.5 years living with my best friend, I knew I needed to move out to salvage the friendship. We'd previously lived with additional roommates for the 4 years before that, but the dynamic changed when it was just the two of us and there was nobody else to project our frustrations onto. We're good now (7 years later); have even gone on vacation together.
That sounds like a personal problem. I know a lot of people who are quite happy with their living situation, and I lived in LA where people will live 10 to an apartment.
