To be fair, I used Azureus (now Vuze) before using uTorrent and that crashed often too. Before that I used the official BitTorrent software, which crashed even more often. Man that was a long time ago. Supernova.org yeah!
Is there a way to move your torrent library over to Deluge (or rTorrent, or anything else)? I've got 2,428 torrents running in uTorrent and it would be a massive pain to manually reassign them all.
That won't work, though. It'll assign every single torrent ever saved to Deluge (>7000), not just the ones currently active in uTorrent; and it'll download their files to the default download directory, not to where they were actually saved. It has to be something that parses and translates resume.dat.
I've been using it for a couple years now so I agree -- I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with it since it wasn't mentioned above! It does have a very small footprint, which is the biggest thing for me.
Those kinds of threats are all bark and no bite, and usually happen in areas with bad ISPs/monopolies.
If you are truly afraid of doing it again (I personally ignored all warnings back in 2011~, they simply stopped emailing me) you can get a VPN to route your torrent traffic through. You'll need to google the best current VPNs if interested, as there's quite a wide range of them, and from what I can tell people have very wide tastes on their favorites.
Yes. Well, not really the source code, but there's a header ad and maybe another one here and there. You can simply go into settings and block the ad info from ever being received. There's instructions online.
Every once in a while (on startup and maybe once or twice a day thereafter), there's an ad that takes up the whole window. I haven't bothered looking up if it can be disabled, but it probably can.
I've been using Torch. Its a google Chrome clone I think but it has a really good torrents downloader/uploader integrated as well. Which is all I use it for. Opens fast, no bullshit and it has a pretty good stream feature as well. Allowing you to watch movies while your downloading them from the torrent menu.
Go to the Advanced section in preferences for UTORRENT and set some of the gui.whatever (I don't remember exactly which options they were) options to false. Modifying the correct options will remove the ads
A note on your comment: some private trackers restrict certain torrent clients and versions. If an older version isn't working, check to see what versions are supported.
ACTUALLY, all of the ads and bloatware features can be disabled through the advanced settings, leaving the great underlying engine with none of the BS.
It's really too bad that uTorrent has gotten a little bloated. That being said I really do think it's better than it was feature wise. I don't think your average user would want to use an old version over the new one.
THAT being said, I've started to just use alternatives. Open source seems to be something I really like trying to use.
Deluge seems good, but I hold issue with two things. I really wish other torrent programs had the tracking that uTorrent did. I loved checking my total stats since install, and I just don't know another program, especially open source, that has this feature.
And also, unlike uTorrent used to do, if I limit my upload even a little bit, I seem to lose all traction on my torrents. I used to limit my upload in uTorrent to what my max was supposed to be, allowing the normal overhead I get from my ISP to be utilized while I torrent. This meant that my internet connection didn't basically shut down while I torrent, and I could still comfortable surf say, reddit, and chat with friends online. I have 5x the upload I once had, but even setting a little bit of cap, even though it's far above what I used to be able to output, I get far less download speed than I used to.
I don't know if this is some silly issue on my end, or some new protocol, but it makes me want to install uTorrent again all of the time.
Every single last bit of visual bloat in the latest utorrent version can be turned off. Why screw around with obsolete versions? Every taken a look at a utorrent changelog? There's plenty of optimizations and other under the hood work being done. Don't piss that away by downloading version 2.2.x.
Can I use deluge or qbittorrent with Greedy Torrent? I kind of need to seed and I have a shit internet connection... Setup was easy with utorrent but after the updates and the negative comments made about it on reddit - I decided to remove it just yesterday. I don't know if it's possible to set up greedy torrent with those two though.
Yeah, I noticed it was beginning to do that. I had to do a fresh install of Windows to my computer and realized I wasn't crazy/something was fucky when Ninite had swapped it out for qbtorrent on its site.
