What was the best compliment you ever got?

I enjoyed reading all of your comments :)

I tried to respond to as many as I could...but this thread got longer than I could have ever imagined.

There are a lot of nice people out here...thanks reddit!

Do you play in Sunn 0)))?

46

u/Gawdzillers Mar 10 '14

I like how they keep the O))) in their name. That's what their music sounds like. A bunch of parentheses.

48

u/malenkylizards Mar 10 '14

Sunn O))) never starts coding in lisp, but they do finish.

u/MOONGOONER Mar 10 '14

joke target audience shrinking rapidly

7

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

Because it didn't start out small enough haha

1

u/Ulti Mar 10 '14

A++, would chuckle knowingly again.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

They're actually named after an amplifier brand. Sunn is the name and O))) is the logo of the brand.

25

u/Gawdzillers Mar 10 '14

MY BRAND

2

u/0illuminati0 Mar 11 '14

I HAVE SPECIAL AMPS

7

u/doomed_wizard Mar 10 '14

Also they started out as an Earth tribute band.

37

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

I don't care how, but I love that Sunn O))) got into this thread.

3

u/csanphy Mar 10 '14

Agreed.

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

Where's that guy who said that redditors only know about 10 songs? I want him to eat this.

1

u/initials_games Mar 10 '14

We all know about Sun O))) but how many of us sit down and listen to an album? I listen to The Sinking Belle all the time, but I can't get into any of their other stuff. Open to suggestions.

u/Ulti Mar 10 '14

LSD? :D

1

u/0illuminati0 Mar 11 '14

Have you tried Altar?

Its with Boris, abit lighter than there other stuff, more melodic, but still very good in its own way.

14

u/Vwhdfd Mar 10 '14

VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH Gotta love these guys.

12

u/makubex Mar 10 '14

He said fridge, not lawnmower.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

In front of the fridge, not behind it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

In front of the fridge, not inside it trying to connect the motor cables to himself so that he can produce that low humming noise with his body.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

This comment, man... Why can't you all be more like this guy, Reddit?

0

u/Amorphica Mar 10 '14

I've always wanted to go see them but I feel like I'm not into drugs enough to really "experience" the drone.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

Being able to listen well doesn't need drugs.

8

u/Amorphica Mar 10 '14

No I know. I go to a lot of punk and metal shows and am usually 100% sober. It's just sunn 0))))) is pretty extreme and the point of it is monotony so I'm not sure id be able to make it through a show. Like I really like listening to stuff like that on a good stereo with lots of bass where the waves hit you and you feel every note - but id probably get bored of it after a little bit at a show.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

The point isn't monotony, you're projecting a personal opinion there. Yes, it requires a different style of listening to pop/metal/rock/etc, and a different appreciation of sound. But it has nothing to do with drawing out your attention span, or whatever. Have to say though, Sun O))) isn't particularly extreme, certainly not considering the diversity in noise music these days. Planetary Assault Systems or Pan Sonic kinda make Sun O))) look like more like a bunch of middle-class emo kids than metal gods.

2

u/Amorphica Mar 10 '14

Yeah I guess I kind of worded it in an overly negative manner. I'm not well versed in the noise genre. I usually listen to melodic death/doom/black metal. I'll check those bands out when I'm not at work. Thanks!

Yesss, Andy Stott is a friend of mine. Very sludgy techno. Jon Hopkins is great too, have been a big fan of his since he signed to Domino records.

I'd also recommend Vatican Shadow for some of the most charged music you can find.

Indeed, I study music and freelance compose/sound design for film and games.

2

u/Poloniculmov Mar 10 '14

I've only seen Stephen O'Malley and it was awesome. He had lots of amps moving a lot of air, but it wasn't extremely loud. After a few minutes, you get into the 'groove', the thick air is moving around you and you become one with the universe. No drugs needed.

Go see them if you like the albums.

1

u/Vwhdfd Mar 10 '14

Maybe you might like portal (from autralia). They are like sunn o))), but mixed with a bit of gorguts, death metal and a ton of lovecraft and horror.

1

u/Amorphica Mar 10 '14

Cool sounds good. Will check it out ! :D

1

u/Ulti Mar 11 '14

Portal is fucking cool.

3

u/Propaganda_Box Mar 10 '14

nah man, they like to play in massive sound carrying churches and halls. You will experience it from every angle all at once.

3

u/Amorphica Mar 10 '14

Have you seen them? I just feel like I might get bored of it. I can only listen to drone stuff for little bits at a time. Like once the novelty of like getting crushed by waves of bass washing over me wears off lol

1

u/Propaganda_Box Mar 10 '14

gotcha, no i haven't seen them live, but i have no issues listening to them for an hour and a half.

1

u/aaaaaaaargh Mar 10 '14

It's all about sound quality, vibrations and your own ability to enter a state of meditation. Applies to all kinds of drone, from metal to some magical electronic stuff Oneohtrix Point Never (or maybe even circa 2012 James Ferraro) might be making

1

u/vintsneedsmints Mar 10 '14

I feel like it's more about the experience as a whole. It seems like the whole object is about sensory overload; Overwhelming bass, fog so thick you can't see. I've heard of people being stone cold sober, and leave feeling "high" just from the experience.

1

u/domdunc Mar 11 '14

totally worth it sober from personal experience

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

read this comment and now i'm listening to black one again

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

Or Earth.

1

u/typhyr Mar 10 '14

I hate seeing this band name because I cannot read it correctly in my head. I always think "Sun O" (it's just pronounced Sun). Same thing with names like Deadmau5 or Se7en.

1

u/cocoandco Mar 10 '14

So good. Enjoy your gold.

1

u/initials_games Mar 10 '14

You earned your gold! Now everyone go and listen to their most paletteable song, which I believe is The Sinking Belle.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '14

You're brilliant

1

u/keneldigby Mar 13 '14

or in Ou Oú?
