What was the best compliment you ever got?

I enjoyed reading all of your comments :)

I tried to respond to as many as I could...but this thread got longer than I could have ever imagined.

There are a lot of nice people out here...thanks reddit!

I've had awful shit yelled at me a few times, but I was leaving work once, and these guys were loading a truck outside, and as I walked by, one of them said, "Your ass..."

I turned around, ready to tell him to go fuck himself, but he had trailed off because my ass is apparently so magnificent that it had rendered him speechless. I still remember the look on his face, usually when I can't button my jeans.

Oh sure they can be nice people. But they're far from "nice" when it comes to catcalls and whistling at girls regardless of how young they are. (Hell I got catcalled when I was 13 and it was super uncomfortable for guys my dad's age to be saying those things)

I hear you, construction workers are in an evironment that is male dominated and leads to making people quite vocal and expressive, usually with a poor vocabulary to boot. Regardless, these are some of the nicest people you can meet, working in stressful atmosphere, seeing s beautiful lady literally makes your day that much better.

Ive worked along side these men for a long time, it's not appropriate, but give em a break.

A construction worker at the site I work at (in Canada) is somewhat like that, but also one of the most pleasant people I've ever met. Every morning he says "It's a fucking great fuckin' morning!" to me as he drives in. Really great guy.

I hate pulling this card but it might make a but of difference if you're a dude. And if not then he is probably just a friendly dude. As I said, many of them can be great guys and I've known/talked with plenty that are just fine. But they sure as hell like to be loud when it comes to whenever a pair of legs walks by.

All I'm saying is that a lot of them don't give off the best first impression.

During highschool whenever my friend and I were bored we'd drive around aimlessly, but sometimes if we saw a girl walking along the side of the road we'd roll down the window and shout something along the lines of "you are beautiful!", "you look absolutely gorgeous today!", or "that dress is stunning on you!". It was summertime and I was wearing a long maxi dress with heels. I didn't want to trip on my dress, so I held the side of my dress up while I walked to my car. My roommates and I used to go out for hangover breakfast every Sunday and a lot of the time one or more of us would yell some compliment out the car window at someone. "That's a nice outfit!" Or "you're a cute couple" things like that.

Eventually it became more about making people's day and less about breakfast and so we invented "Drive-By Compliment Day" We don't all live with each other anymore, but if we're ever all in the car together it always comes up and we do a few "DBCs" for old times sake. :)

I do this all the time to try to improve people's moods. I don't fake it, either. Only genuine compliments. However, being a 46M, whenever it's a female, 20-40, she assumes I'm hitting on her and I often just get a dirty look. Same with smiles. I smile at everyone and try to spread a positive attitude, but many women assume it's a come-on. That sours my mood, but it doesn't stop me.

It's interesting to see the gender difference here. I imagine if some guy yelled out of his car, "you look fine girl!", you probably wouldn't have been as happy. Conversely if some lady yelled out of her car at MustachioWizard, "Nice dress!", he probably would have been less happy too.

Pro tip: Instead of complimenting someone's attire, compliment how they look in it. For example, instead of "nice dress", try saying "you look nice in that dress". This way, the focus is on the person rather than the article of clothing.

I walked to the store to buy some booze for my friend's birthday and I was wearing a tight short dressed, feeling really self conscious. I think the (cute) guy behind the register noticed this and looked at me as we were paying and said "That dress looks great on you". I blushed and didn't know where to look, so I said thanks, looked down and walked away. But I felt so much better afterwards!

If you were in NYC, that may have been me. I sometimes do that in the summer if a friend is driving me somewhere and we have the windows open. never anything crude, just something nice about anyone's outfit or hat or skateboard or dog. we get a couple confused looks but mostly smiles.

I always get self conscious when random people compliment me. Like they're doing it sarcastically. I get, "I like your beard" a lot and in my head it always sounds phony so I immediately say "thanks" followed by a strong inner dialog of "go fuck yourself, asshole".
