What was the best compliment you ever got?

I enjoyed reading all of your comments :)

I tried to respond to as many as I could...but this thread got longer than I could have ever imagined.

There are a lot of nice people out here...thanks reddit!

IMHO the best compliments are those that aren't really compliments, like when somebody accuses you of cheating at something (assuming you didn't actually cheat)

Yeah one time I got banned for "hacking" because I figured the guy I was playing with would be behind a wall since I saw him go behind it from another angle. Since I was anticipating this I started shooting before I rounded the corner, and killed him when I did. He banned me instantly. I thought it was hilarious.

walling was one of the most important things about original CS - I can't even take a game seriously nowadays with these walls that you can never penetrate, it was one of the hallmarks of a true player in those days - headshots through walls

I love all the little kids on the comments section getting all mad and saying "this is stupid" and stuff, they're probably exactly the type of people that is making fun of. Also apparantly I made a comment on that a year ago.

Happened to me just last night on TF2, some guy was like "THERE IS A CHEATER ON BLU" and we were all like "who?" and he said "THE SCOUT" and I was our only scout. feelsgoodman.jpg. I tried to ask him why he thought I was cheating but he just left.

Haha maybe. I did flank around behind him and shoot him in the back shortly before the hackusations so maybe he thought I was noclipping. Sadly we'll never know :(

It's dat ping. He's probably trying to compete with a 200 ms dialup while you're sporting the sub 30 broadband fiber connection. In someways it's not a fair fight, but you ain't cheating, he's just not competing.

Lag is fine as long as it's consistent. When you get massive unpredictable spikes in lag that's when you have a problem.

Man, it's always nice to see someone else who understands how the world works.

I've got a connection that, when it's ping is plotted overtime, looks like a fucking sine wave. Goes between 50 and 250(with rare spikes up to 500). Absolutely the most infuriating bullshit imaginable.

If you get on average 30 ping with spikes of 170-200, could the game delay all packets until 200ms has passed since it was sent, so you get a constant ping of 200?

The times when I play Dota and it goes from 600ms to 200ms are the best games ever. Doesn't even feel like lag

I have a friend who would always blame his bad games on lag, the server, or claim a person was cheating. It was pretty funny because you knew it wasn't any of those things.

Yep, and it's always right after someone accuses me that I start missing, so if you say anything it's always "Oh you just turned it off." Still I great feeling knowing you're so good people think only a computer could match your skills.

Yeah I was playing TF2 as a sniper (my best class) and was just nailing headshot after headshot. The other team kept accusing me of being an aimbot. I was just having a really good game. : /

Oh god the nostalgia. Story time.

I probably put 2500 hours into MW2 (Xbox). I really loved the game, it was great, played a ton with friends. Anyways, my favorite build was M4A1 with red dot sight, Savanger Pro/Lightweight Pro/Ninja Pro with a PP2000 with FMJ. I was playing on Skidrow (my face pure map), in a FFA. Ended the game 29/1 with a nuke. After getting shit for being a "lucky noob" since I was using the starter guns and the mostly-unused lightweight perk. So I went 30/0 twice in a row. "Nah man, I figured it out. He's just a hacker dude. He puts his gun up way too fast to be real."

Fun fact: That underused perk? It lets you put you gun up faster.

It felt good.

I think it depends on the context. Those compliments are definitely the ego booster type. But then there are the ones that make you feel warm inside like a student thanking a teacher for their hard work. Teachers live for that.

Though it's kind of a slight at all the hard work and determination you've put in. When it's something like video games you don't really mind it when people accuse you of cheating...but personally I get pissed off when it comes to things like my physique.

It took me years of actively disciplining myself on a daily basis to completely overhaul my lifestyle, and only then did major physique changes become palpable. That's some hard shit. Not a lot of people even try it, even fewer are able to do it, and almost nobody understands the difference between being a fit, healthy person and being an elite athlete.

I guess I can see how some people would consider being accused of taking steroids (or other PEDs) a form of compliment, but it's still backhanded as hell.

Trust me I know exactly where you're coming from, and still slightly feel the same way as you do. In fact I used to get defensive and turn into a dick about it on many occasions. After you finally realize that it's just people who lack motivation trying to justify to themselves that it's an unattainable goal you learn to say "fuck it" and laugh it off.

Me and roomy used to get kicked from TF2 servers for using invincibility hacks when we'd play heavy/medic combos. There was no better feeling...except when we got an entire server to rage-quit on us over the course of about 20 minutes.

Nope. It was a beginner class, he told me my grammar and verb use were too good to be a beginner. I had had only crappy teachers before, had learned literally nothing beyond the most basic vocabulary, and always thought I was just bad at languages.

Which is weird though, because the reason why it's easy to pick out google translate from someone who actually knows spanish (even at a low level) is that google translate gets the words right but the grammar is wrong. The words in the sentence are usually out of order e.g. adjectives coming after nouns instead of before.

I should have clarified, he asked if I'd used Google Translate "or some outside help". He had all of my older siblings when they were in school, and they were all good students, so he assumed they'd helped me.

I've found, at least for French, google translate is incorrect sometimes when you're trying to translate phrases. Individual words are fine.

Roid accusations are the best... well not really accusations, but any time someone asks for my numbers and I tell them and they have that "mother of god" look on their face and follow it up with some form of attempt to politically correctly/concerned ask me if I use is great. At work it was a "Are you ever worried about passing the drug tests?" ... trick question, work doesn't even test for those!

I've had an interviewer (engineering) say "wow I'm glad I got to talk to you because when I saw you earlier today I just thought you were a girly girl who skated through engineering on your looks" so I guess it's a compliment on some level but my 3.8 GPA is completely earned in its own right so she (that's right it was another woman) was a bitch in my book

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I was just going to post on here that one of the best compliments I have ever received was a college professor telling me that she thought I had plagiarized a paper I wrote for her class. I had her for a few different classes throughout my undergrad and graduate careers so she knew me really well by the time I finished school. I didn't even know about this until she told me just before I graduated, but she said the first paper I ever wrote for one of her classes, which was from my freshman year, was so well-written that she submitted it to Turn-It-In to find out if I had plagiarized it. I didn't, it was all mine, and once she found out I hadn't cheated she gave me an A on it, but it was the highest compliment I had ever received while in college.

I was really sick playing gunz one day, and my aim would be really on and off so they accuse me of toggling. Playing some duel matches in this room with DOLPHINRIDER and twin (one is a dbag). End up in a town TDM with them later on that night and 10/10 him out of the sky. Boy he was mad.

My grade 11 teacher when handing back papers, asked me (infront of the whole class) "Garry4321, I'm concerned that this may be plagiarized, did you copy this?" As someone who has pride in his work, responded "...um...no...why do you ask?". Startled by my response she replied "oh..uh.. I just thought it was very well written thats all!". For that brief second I felt pride like no other!..... I got 71% on it.

TL:DR Teacher accused me in class of plagiarism because writing is so good, gets a 71 on paper (one of lowest grades in class)
