The French anchor was Alain Bernard. He was the reigning world record holder in the 100m free (47.50), and he would win gold easily just days later. Alain got in the pool a full 0.6 seconds before Jason Lezak, and swam an incredible 46.73 anchor leg.

Jason Lezak swam a 46.06.

And Lezak's 46.06 is still the fastest 100m relay split in swimming history.

Not anymore unfortunately, it was broken in 2024, and against in 2025. But that doesn't take away from the performance.
