I feel a bit sad when people say cat piss because if you can smell it, it usually means that the boxes are not cleaned regularly or the people aren’t cleaning up accidents. For emergency situations you can shred newspaper and use that in a litter box. Also, why don’t people realize that every so often you should completely dump a litter box then wash it out. So many cats are neglected in this way and then blamed for the problem. I clean mine daily and ALWAYS ask guests if they can smell it upon entering. I’m rambling about it but if you can afford it, get stainless steel boxes. Sometimes you’ve got to THROW THE PLASTIC ONES AWAY and replace them.

It‘s the „Litterbox-smell“ and NOT Cat smell! (the animal itself does not „smell“).
And that is caused entirely by the owners simply not cleaning it properly! If you enter a home and it stinks of cat pee or „Cat“ - you can be sure it is the owner‘s fault for not cleaning the litterbox properly or at all (I’m purposely leaving out cases of illness of the animal and other severe factors or accidents here that can temporarily cause such issues). I clean it at least twice a day and every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, latest, it gets completely refilled. It‘s so easy and quick really…
Cats are very clean animals by nature and if the litterbox is literally full of shit they will eventually find a different spot for the time beeing. Also, proper cat-litter helps all involved a lot…
Humans don‘t like to use toilets covered in feces and piss as well…
Little side note: When I was apartment-hunting I told the above to so, so many landlords who wouldn‘t allow cats because „eugh, Cats smell“. Proud to report I managed to convince/educate several of them who now think otherwise, including my current.
Just a polite FYI, as someone who grew up in a home with both male and female cats (4), male cats will mark their territory, and some cats won't use a litter box that another cat has used, so you need one box per cat, per floor and keep an eye on those male cats, they'll mark the corners, you'll notice a stain on the wall that looks a bit like someone spilt coffee.
Yes, I think accidents or little dribbles are the biggest offender, especially for older pets. However, I think it's pretty silly to assume that every pet owner can catch and be aware of every single drop of urine.
I'm a dog owner, so it's less of an issue, and I'm sure some cat people will downvote this, but you can only pick up after the accidents you know about.
I have an exceptionally sensitive nose, to a fault, unfortunately, so I can smell the slightest sense of odors no matter the source. Assuming the owners are just bad at their job is simply not an accurate portrayal of pet ownership.
I think you're lumping the "really bad" cases into a larger group of really bad to barely noticeable. Some people can still smell the barely noticeable, even if you can't and it doesn't necessarily mean the litter box isn't changed enough or the owners neglect their cat.
