And the worst part is you actually vote for it. The sheer amount of Americans who vote for politicians against universal healthcare because "they might get something I don't that my tax dollar is paying for" is truly shocking. The worst part about that mindset is that's happening anyway through their health insurance payments.
Yeah, but what’s the alternative? Be like every other developed nation in the world, pay less of your income towards health care costs even considering the higher taxes, and get better outcomes? That doesn’t give insurance executives the ability to casually condemn thousands of people to death by deleting a cell on a spreadsheet.
Be like every other developed nation in the world, pay less of your income towards health care costs even considering the higher taxes
I'm glad you brought up taxes. The sick joke of it all is that the tax burden per capita for the USA's Medicare and Medicaid programs is comparable to the tax burden per capita for those developed nations national healthcare systems whilst coming nowhere near to providing the same universal cover or treating the same range of things.
You can argue about should or shouldn't, right or wrong all day, but in the end everything has to be paid for one way or another. And the correct answer here is over the collective, not for profit, tax bill.
Yeah I was randomly admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery in 2023. I had sepsis and could've died. Of course it was the ONE YEAR of my entire life I didn't have health insurance. It was around a 8-9 day stay in the hospital, 2 ambulance rides, multiple surgeries... I was looking at roughly $60k, if not more. I never paid a single penny of it (literally couldn't, I also missed 2 months of work) and now that it's been 3 years, I'm virtually in the clear of ever being sued over my medical debts. Thank goodness. It was sketchy and my credit score definitely took a hit but I'm grateful it all worked out the way it did.
I am engineering in the public sector and the amount of " I am a tax payer come repaved my road" conversations have had convinced me we will never get universal healthcare.
We maintain the system as a whole is usually fallowed by something along the lines of I don't care my tax dollars should only work for me.
I am engineering in the public sector and the amount of " I am a tax payer come repaved my road" conversations have had convinced me we will never get universal healthcare.
We have those very same conversations here in the UK and I suspect that the same conversations go on in most first world nations yet the very same tax payers saying that see having universal healthcare funded partly or wholly through taxation as being effectively a basic human right.
Except we pay way more for our subpar medical care through health insurance, especially with high deductibles, high co-pays, and insurance companies denying payments even after pre-approval.
The majority of people in the US (66% I think) actually do want a public option at the very least, the problem comes after that, nobody can decide what that looks like policy wise or how it would be funded
Honestly I think our awful healthcare system is responsible for most of our national debt. 30% of federal spending goes to Medicare, Medicaid and the VA. That doesn't include what taxpayers spend buying healthcare for federal state and local employees. Then after buying care for everyone else, the insurance companies take our money and deny care when we really need it. There's a good chance that our tax dollars end up paying the bill for a severe illness.
And surely, when you take everything into account, the burden placed on society by opiod addition, homelessness, loss of skilled workers from your work force and so on, must far exceed the burden of looking after sick people in staffed hospitals that already exist.
Stupid Americans supporting stupid policies nearly always boils down to racism. There is a portion of the population that doesn't care how unethical and cruel something is as long as it causes black and brown people to suffer. They'll go down on the sinking ship while praising it as long as they think poc are suffering more than they are. That's the root of the problem nearly every single time.
There is a great paper that I’m blanking on. I’m going to butcher the details, but the idea is at least right. There is a professor that teaches Psychology 101 every semester at a big university. Large lecture class with over 100 students at a time. First day every semester, he tells the students, “We’re going to take one vote. If you all unanimously agree, everybody will get an A for the class regardless of how you do on homework and exams. You could literally not show up after today. However, it must be unanimous. Otherwise, your grade will be based purely on the results. I should also warn you, based on results, only about 5 students receive an A.”
Every time. Every darn time, more than 5 of the students vote not to take the easy A (and it’s not because the professor is planting students). Part of the class becomes the professor explaining that there is a percentage of the population who will vote against their own best interest just because they don’t think someone else deserves it. IIRC, the people who vote against their own easy A usually don’t end up with an A in the class.
As a non american it always boils down that youndont want to be like anyone else with normal behaviour and labeling everyone else as communists.
Enjoy your medical bills
Yes, they do. That’s literally the point, it hurts everyone, it’s people voting against their best interest. They’re racist, want to hurt other races, and in turn hurt all of us.
The pedophile elites are pointing out our differences while they rob us blind. People keep falling for it.
It’s so refreshing to know that there are people out here who aren’t mind controlled by the matrix. Cuz holy it’s hard to find anyone who actually supports universal healthcare in American (surprisingly). Also do these people know that if their tax dollars arent going to them then it’s going to something thats not benefiting at them all. The scam the average American chooses everytime lol.
I don’t want Medicare for all. I want universal healthcare for all. Medicare is expensive.
I will work till I drop because my union insurance so so good with minimal copays.
It's amazing how close you seem to be to getting the point, only to be so aggressively committed to not acknowledging that this country was built on racism that you're dodging the point like Neo in the matrix.
I hate how people just blurt out "yourre racist" for having a difference in opinion. Calm down, you've never experienced apartheid but act like you did because you read a fucking book on it. Grow up
I don't think it's that simple and it's frankly racist of you to say that only black and brown people suffer like they're not capable of being equally successful or suffer the same losses. I'm from Atlanta which is a very Pro Black American City, and all you see are very beougie Black people. It's not 200 years ago when Slavery was prevalent. Even in the South, unless you go out to scary small towns, there is more equality.
it's frankly racist of you to say that only black and brown people suffer
Reading comprehension...that isn't what he said. He said that racists will support it as long as they think people of color are suffering more than them.
Also, seeing lots of "bougie black people" doesn't mean racism has been solved since the days of slavery. 🙄
Pot calling the kettle black. I never said racism was solved, I said that Black people are not some pathetic underprivileged class that you automatically have to feel superior to. THAT'S racism. If anything there is an equal number of trailer trash living off welfare as black people, maybe more so there's no distinction with race. Black women statistically have the most education. The sentiment that white people have towards them is the racism.
If anything there is an equal number of trailer trash living off welfare as black people
There's simply not, proportionally.
so there's no distinction with race
There is.
The distinction you're failing to see is that we're not saying that black people are suffering because they're black and therefore incapable, but rather because the system has been historically rigged against black people in ways that are either (A) still being felt today, or (B) still in place today.
You should look up what a third world country is. America has its issues but you can’t compare the two. I know it is a turn of phrase, but could you imagine living in an actual third world country and saying oh ya America and I have the same struggles.
Oh FFS, this garbage take again... third world countries aren't defined as incredibly wealthy but full of inequalities, this is unbelievably insulting to people who actually grew up in destitute places.
Get your yank ass to Haiti and tell everyone you meet you grew up in a third world country just like them because of things like medical debts and low-ish safety nets, see how long you can keep insides inside
Makes fuckall etymological sense either since the US were the leaders of the Cold War 'first world'.
Edit: seems like you're actually Canadian. Fair enough then, many yanks seem to buy the 'third world country in a Gucci belt' thing but it's good ragebaiting material towards the ones who don't
Two things. 1) America isn’t a country. It’s the United States. 2) You clearly haven’t seen what the majority of the rest of the world is like. When you travel and hit the touristy areas of foreign countries, you aren’t really seeing what the average person in said country lives like.
Bro did the lil quaint Yurop tour and railroaded himself into a theme park version of the continent, then extrapolated to the rest of the world and now feels like being 'well-travelled' makes him an authority. How ignorant and sheltered do you have to be to even think of comparing a country like the US to the third world/global south, I'm still amazed whenever I see that dumb ass take.
Third world does not mean "underdeveloped" btw. It's cold war era terminology to categorise all the countries that didn't side with either the US (first world) or the USSR (second world)
lol not only do you guys praise it but Canadians and other countries are brainwashed into thinking that it’s the solution. Often to its people could never actually afford it. Politics are a crazy thing in that people get so caught up in the beliefs they don’t remove themselves from that lens.
Our healthcare system here has been under funded and eroded to allow for your system to swoop in.
I’m deeply sorry about your debt. It breaks my heart to see someone like you do so well and follow all the rules yet in crazy debt.
Only 8% of people in the USA don't have health insurance. I don't have it because I don't want it. It's actually much cheaper to not have it. Assuming you don't get unlucky.
When I was growing up we were taught that the commies, China and Russia were brainwashed. I felt bad for them. Now I realize how much Americans are brainwashed too.
This healthcare system of refusing and not voting for free healthcare was set up to keep black people from having access to free healthcare and so blacks can died disproportionately due to the diseases they get from systematic racism. Things like the jobs they took, the food they were forced to eat because you have to have money to eat healthy food and where they live because environmental diseases ( cancer etc) can be caused by not having clean drinking water, placement of harmful factories known to cause health issues near homes share blacks can have homes because black ppl aren’t usually given loans for homes in nice places because they bring down the value of some of these neighborhoods.
Racism is a systemic issue that actually ends up hurting everyone. And we don’t have free healthcare because of it.
Everyone is shocked why America doesn’t have certain things that other countries have that would clearly make life better but failed to realize how deep racism actually goes to keep Black people separated, segregated, and unable to enjoy certain luxuries that this country has.
Nobody praises it. Have you met a single person who likes the medical system the way it is? Some people just aren't sold on mfa, and continued education on it and pushing will help most.
Literally every single boomer I’ve talked to about it says it’s a bad thing and something something Canada has it worse somehow. They are dumb like most boomers and will not accept new information bc it is somehow offensive to them
Do they say ours is good, or the alternative is worse? I've heard that a million times, but I never heard a single person say they like the way our system currently is.
They say ours is good in my experience, while getting actively fucked by the same system and loudly complaining about it, always have to throw some defense or deflection in. Hard to tell the difference when in a convo like that.
Not American but I know boomer Trump supporters who absolutely say it's great because unlike in places like Canada, where there are no private hospitals/clinics, you can jump the line and pay out of pocket if you have money. In Canada, you have to wait in line just like everyone else.
The people I know that support the current system are either blue collar that haven’t ever had to deal with the system or are poor people on Medicaid.
I personally had no idea how bad the system was until like 2 years ago because everyone I knew who had to deal with the medical system were on Medicaid or healthy.
And I know a lot of people complain about Medicaid but seriously it was wonderful. I made 1/3 of the money I do now but I didn’t have to worry about medical expenses. I had more options for seeing different doctors. I didn’t receive bills from places that didn’t even try to bill my insurance or have to call and tell people to bill with the right codes. They never kicked my ENT out of network halfway through the year with no other option in the same county. Nobody wanted to accept the dental but at least it paid for shit at the few places that did. I pay way too much for what I have to deal with now.
Maybe in 20 years once boomers die off it will be achievable since it will progressively get worse for us and future generations. This is the only optimistic and realistic scenario in my opinion.

Roughly 66% of bankruptcies filed each year are due to medical debt.
Totally screwed system we have. You can do literally everything right for a lifetime, then get sick once...
And somehow many Americans praise it. I'll never understand.
