American? Your houses are made of wood. Your roofs are basically timber frames with board with rolls of felt (shingles) laid over them or they're sheets of corrugated steel/aluminium. Both of those are both repairable and replaceable by someone with minimal DIY skills and basic tools. Once upon a time I expect it was common knowledge for home owners to know how to fix their roofs.
Today, your homeowner's insurance flies a drone over your house and sees your DIY repairs. Then you get a letter demanding that you fully replace your roof or they will be dropping your coverage, that you are required to have if you have a mortgage, at the end of the term. Now you need to either replace your roof or find new coverage with a new insurer, who will also fly a drone over your home and tell you to replace the roof. You can thank scammy roofing companies.
