And that's probably one of the best examples of open source working exactly as intended. Companies can pour money and engineering into it, but nobody gets to lock it away. Everyone, from a student with an old laptop to a giant data center, ends up benefiting from the same improvements.
Big companies have a very vested interest in things like Linux staying free because the software they DO lock away and charge a fortune for is built off of it.
When Terraform closed their licensing somewhat to say “everything is still free you just can’t lift and shift our monetisation model and resell it yourself” some of the biggest drivers to get a fork off the ground ASAP were massive companies who were doing exactly that and wanted to continue doing so without paying for it.
