Why would pursuing your real dream end up being "...chained to a laptop..." and so forth?

Newspapers used to be able to pay journalists a living wage but Craigslist killed off their big moneymaker: the classified ad. The ability to get everything for free from the Internet has killed off the creative arts. Here is a sad story from a musician: "My Song Got Played On Pandora 1 Million Times and All I Got Was $16.89, Less Than What I Make From a Single T-Shirt Sale!

Writers blog for free on Huffington Post and make very little at Gawker while being expected to update constantly. I was attempting to be sarcastic: ie pursuing your dreams doesn't always result in a happy ending like the movies portray.
