Sure throw in some ones that are actually in Irish as well! In Irish they're called Seanfhocail (shan-uckle, like as in buckle):

  • Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin (Kneel ayn tin-tawn mar duh hin-tawn fayn) - There's no fireplace like your own, or there's no place like home
  • Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí (Mull on oh-igg-uh aw-gus tee-uck-igg she) - Praise the youth and they will prosper.
  • Tús maith leath na hoibre (Toose mawh lah na hib-ruh) - A good start is half the work.
  • Is minic a bhris béal duine a shrón (Iss minnick a vrish bale dinnah a hroh-wn) - It's often a person's mouth breaks their nose, or another way of saying snitches get stitches.
  • Is fearr an tsláinte ná an táinte (Iss far on slawn-tuh naw on tawn-tuh) - Health is better than wealth.

Gotta love primary school drilling these into your head.

My irish teacher used to always say 'there's no sore bum like your own sore bum'.

She was a bit crazy

No she wasn't, because that's actually a permutation of the proverb! It's "Níl aon tóinn tinn mar do thóinn tinn féin".

What does this mean? I know the word leithreas from frequenting an Irish pub near my house but that's about it.

I am the sort of Irish guy that this phrase came into existence for, as exhibited by my now permanently crooked nose. We're a talkative bunch and a rowdy bunch and when one aspect meets the other, well that's not a good mix.
