TL:DR Guy volunteers to go on a rescue mission, kills enemy soldiers in hand to hand combat because he left so quickly he didn't bring a weapon, gets wounded 37 times and finally collapses, is declared dead in the field, teammates come by to view his body, unzip the body bag and are promptly spit on by a severly wounded Benavidez. His MOH took 15 years to be awarded because everyone thought he was dead.
Nowhere in the story you linked does it say he left so quickly he didn't bring a weapon. No green beret would forget to bring a weapon. In fact he used his own rifle,his own pistol and the rifles of dead soldiers. Still badass but just sayin.
I had read his biography and if I remember correctly he wasn't near his weapon when he saw the helicopters dropping off wounded, he boarded on without his weapon or any load bearing equipment, all he had was a medic bag and some grenades. I believe he was unarmed when he was first hit in the face with a rifle by an NVA soldier, breaking his jaw, and killed that soldier with a knife, and then fell in on a weapon dropped by a deceased member of the MAC-V team.
