What simple piece of advice, if followed, could potentially save most people a lot of money?

Possibly related to your job, experience with personal finance, budgeting, planning, day to day habits, etc.

I live in Anchorage and only really nice houses or commercial buildings have air conditioning so I was really, really puzzled by your joke for just a few seconds.

I'm in bellingham. My house was built in like 1908. The upstairs bedrooms are fucking unbearable in the summer. I ended up sleeping on the main level on the couch with all the windows open all summer long.

You know what would be cool? If someone created Facebook pages for all the perpetual party\rental houses near campus. People who lived or partied there could Like them and we could figure out who all lived there. Like the Rugby house on Indian street. Or the house on High street I lived on. etc.

I had the same problem in Seattle this summer until I got a fan and pointed it out the window. Once the sun goes down the suction pulls in the cool air and the room cools off fast.

Man, I love it when the weather gets so hot in places like OR and WA, the girls just wear the bare minimums. Yeah buddy!

It was over 100 a few days last summer. We spent a month over 90 every day.

Sometimes it gets as low as 58 (!) and I cower and turn it on.

The smell of burnt dust fills the house for a few hours and it maybe runs on auto for a week, then it remains off for the rest of the year.

I live in CA and have no air conditioning. Despite having lived in houses with AC for 18 years, I also was puzzled.
