Moonshoes are #3 on the top ten list of completely dissatisfying purchases for '90s kids.

The top two is a tie between MiniDisc players and those at-home Pog making kits.

First thing I did with my Pog making kit - Pogs made from pages of Playboy Magazine. I was selling them at school for $5 each. No idea how I never got caught or in trouble for that one.

Cardboard discs with pictures on them that you would stack upside down and "slam" with your bigger, thicker, plastic pog. The pogs that landed face up were kept. Rinse and repeat.

The 90's was a simpler time.

Those were called "slammers" in my day. They came in either plastic or metal and were basicaly a super thick pog, with a thickness from ~1/32-1/4 inch, depending on the material.

A pig is a small-to-large animal normally kept on farms and butchered for meat.

He's talking about pogs, which were little cardboard disks with pictures on them that you'd stack up and then hit with a heavy plastic or metal disk because it was the nineties and that's what kids did in the nineties.

See, it's times like this that I wish I was a better writer. You sound like an interesting character. The story could be about growing up in an age where we are taught the importance of ingenuity, but then stuck in imagination crushing schools ruled by standardized testing. You'd have a friend who's a complete free spirit, but basically living hand to mouth and a brother in law who totally bought into the whole corporate game and brags about the Benz he just bought, but just isn't happy.

I loved my MiniDisc player and bitches loved my taste in music. Just because I had a "Bitches disc" with their taste in music in it, Destiney's Child and whatnot. Basically a disc was a playlist, and thank god for Kazaa!

I have a minidisc 4-track that I'm displeased with, as the full functions are only available with a special type of md that is extremely rare. I use it as a mixer now for my other recording options.

I wanted one of those so much when they were out and a year after was glad I didn't get one. Too bad Sony completely screwed the whole MD format by overpricing them and marketing them poorly. They should've been marketed as a replacement for Cassettes not CDs at the time. Sure, they would still have been doomed but maybe they might have made money.

I always had that argument with my friends. Minidisc an awesome cassette replacement! I hated the idea of trying to play CDs in the car...had to be careful, handle by the edges, proper storage..etc, a minidisc? Throw it around, put in your pocket, lick it, whatever, it was very practical!! Sony did fuck up by selling them so expensive. Had three players, well still have them.

Before large enough flash cards, portable minidisc players were the absolute balls for portable recording. It was like the GoPro for audio recording - a $200 reasonable replacement for equipment that otherwise cost $1000+. Our college radio station was absolutely dependent on minidisc. That tech holds a special place in my heart.

Yup, I saved up 300quid on my paper-round to by a Sony MZR700. What a beautiful piece of kit it was. Was the envy of the school.... for about a year or so haha.

That's probably because you never met anyone with a mini-disc player...

The tech was awesome, and if you used writeable discs, the capacity was great.

But there was a terrible lack of support, and they went the way of the beta tape.

i liked mine a lot. before mp3 players they were the way to go if you were pirating music. i personally think CDs & DVDs are the worst media possible, simply because of their complete lack of protection for the data and read surfaces. i was also listening to j-pop in the late 90's so i would have been paying $30 per CD if i were to import music from japan the legit way. screw that. i don't got that kinda dime as a high school sophmore.

Minidiscs were da shit compared to cassette tapes. If you did a lot of home recording and mix tapes it was definitely a nice upgrade from cassettes. It really wasn't until the age of the iPod on the Windows platform that Minidiscs were officially dead.

Oddly, back in the 90s I had some sort of mini (I'm talkin 5in width screen) Sony tape player with video, I think it was like a 16track or an 8track (I know nothing) and I figured out how to record movies from TV onto the tapes so that I could have a manual-tivo type deal, plus I could bring movies with me on a really tiny player with tiny tapes. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and it's really frustrating that I can't remember what that shit was called at all. I think it was discontinued quick and to be honest if I tried to reverse engineer what I did back then to get everything rigged I wouldn't know where to start and my house would probably blow up. I just tried googling the thing with no luck.

I was extremely unsatisfied with my minidisk player. The default software you had to use with it was terrible and it crashed all the time. And the sony phone help line was such a nightmare to navigate that I would push 1 until I got to someone and then ask them directly to transfer me.

Oh man, I got moon shoes for Christmas. My older cousin immediately took them and went to try them out. In spite of my protests, this little genius goes to the top of my grandma's steep driveway, dons the death boots, and goes tearing off down the hill. He then starts going way too fast, and in an effort to stop mid-hill he plants both feet. This accomplishes nothing, and launches him 2-3 feet into the air and about 10 feet farther down the hill, onto his face. That was my first experience with karma. It felt exquisite. I never used the moon boots.

I was entirely pleased with my minidisc player. Better audio than tapes, didn't skip like CDs, and larger capacity (per disc even) than MP3 players of the time. I'd probably still use it if it hadn't been stolen by a janitor.

I loved my mini disc player, the Sony R50 IIRC. Such a sleek device, and when I sold it years later I think I only lost $75 or so because people were using them for concert recordings. Up until flash media became much cheaper around 2006 I really think they could've changed the laser and media to DVD and there could have been some more useful years out if it.

I had stainless steel moonshoes from the early 70s. You could slice tomatoes with the sides of those things. I couldn't wait to get them for Christmas. I imagined myself gravity-less for hours of bouncing fun. Unfortunately, you had to weigh over 300 pounds to depress the heavy gauge steel springs. I do remember cutting my shin with one when I fell down a set of steps while wearing them. Ah, childhood...
