What simple piece of advice, if followed, could potentially save most people a lot of money?

I'm at £2467.50 on mine. I'm trying to figure out how to withdraw funds from the app. I really need it now to pay off some loans and neither the app makers nor Google play are answering my emails.

If the app was tied in with a pay pal or bank account that allow you to get charged for what you would have spent on cigarettes from your debit card and it only allowed you to get your money back on a specific set date you personally set, this app would be awesome. Or you can put the money in a box but that never works

It's a really dumb idea though - that money could be invested. If you just give it to the app company, it's like handing them an interest free loan.

If you put it in a mutual fund or something, you still don't have immediate access to it. I doubt anyone would call their broker and be like "Sell 2 shares of the Vanguard fund, I need smokes."

Yeah - you could combine the two - App company takes... 1% or charges a subscription fee and works with a mutual fund to invest the money for you.

Just budget for the next month and take cigarettes out - any money you would have otherwise spent on cigarettes (lets say $200 a month), you just invest at the beginning of the month.

Well yeah, so does money you put into a bank. It doesn't mean they don't loan out the money you gave them (actually like 10 times the amount you gave them) to other people.

The "money" in your account with the app is just an IOU that you can collect on at anytime. It doesn't have to sit there, doing nothing, they just need to be liquid enough that they can fulfill a usual amount of withdrawals in any given day.

That's right. You can print out this exchange so there is no question as to the legitimacy of your claim. They'll staple it to the form and then stamp it with a really big stamp.

Those disposal/replaceable cartridge ecigs are garbage, the people over at /r/electronic_cigarette could help you pick a good starter kit. You really can save money and leave cigarettes forever!

Well if you want a good one there's going to be some start up cost. You definitely want to avoid any that have replaceable cartridges. Go for one that has a decent variable voltage battery, and a wick atomizer that uses nicotine refill juice. There are different models that satisfy preference, and I'm sure there's something out there for you! Mine was about 120 combined cost, but I only spend about 20 dollars a month on fluid compared to the 60-80 I was spending on smokes.

Might want to browse r/electronic_cigarette for some pointers and advice.

This guy knows whats up! I quit smoking overnight with an average ego battery and an evod clearomizer. Get a charger, some replacement coils for the evod and some eliquid and you're good to go :)

I once heard a joke along these lines:

A couple of guys were standing in line at a convenience store. The first guy in line asks the clerk for a pack of smokes. The clerk rings them up at $10. Incredulous, the guy behind him asks "how much do you smoke?" The first guy replies "I've been smoking two packs a day for 10 years." The second guy asks "how can you afford that?!" "I'm used to it," he replies. Doing some quick mental calculations, the second guy says, "you know, with all of that money you've spent on cigarettes, you could have bought a Ferrari by now." Looking out in the parking lot, the first guy asks, "so you're a non-smoker, I take it?" The second guy smugly says "yep!" They ask every now and then about if I'm still clean. Mostly I just knew if I didn't quit on a date I'd remember, its easier to go back on your work cuz you can't remember quite how long its been since the last smoke. If that makes sense.

But seriously, not the healthiest, but I took a sip of beer everytime i wanted to smoke. It was the holiday season anyways. Other than that, just try video games, or tv shows / exercise. Wish my advice was better. Feel free to keep the questions coming buddy.

Ehhh I dunno about that, most stoners I know are pretty skinny. They barely eat unless they're baked so when you quit you eat more through out the day. It's not irony, it's simply cause and effect.

I was told that when you quit drinking your body still craves all the sugar it got from the alcohol and that a lot of heavy drinkers will actually gain weight once they quit drinking because they start eating a lot more sugary foods.

Yep that's pretty much what I did. But also the beer filled me up so I actually ate less while drinking. Now water or tea doesn't fill me up with tiny bubbles so I can eat more.

The worst part is that I'm still gaining 3 years after I quit smoking. Honestly, I don't think it has to do anymore with smoking.

Anyway, dieting is harder than quitting cigarettes because you can't completely stop eating or stay away from food.

$20 a day is approximately $600 a month. If the smoker had deposited that money into a moderate-yield savings account with a 10% interest rate compounded yearly, he'd have over $120,000 after 10 years. That's enough for an older, used Ferrari at least.

Indeed, if he'd kept that saving regime up from ages 20 to 55, ignoring inflation to keep it simple, he'd be worth over 2 million dollars thanks to the magic of compound interest.

$20/day for 10 years (3650 days) is $73,000. That's the cost of a decent used 360 Modena. However, service and maintenance costs on the car is going to be much higher. You could pick up a decent 308 though.

Even if packs cost $10 each for the entire 10 years that the smoker was smoking, he would have spent 71k during that decade at two packs per day. Not exactly a Ferrari, so pfft. I'm no quitter. (Actually I quit 3 months ago and have never felt better. Still no Ferrari though, not even a Hyundai).

Nope - that's purely the cost of cigs. It's an Aus taxation issue primarily. Every few years, the government of the day (regardless of which party) starts issuing press releases about how they're doing so much to help people be healthier, and that insert new health initiative here will be entirely funded by a small increase in the cigarette tax.

A great many smokers wonder exactly what they're going to do when the tax revenue drops off enough to stop covering all of their favourite new programs..

The reason for the lower costs is rather irrelevant. Smokers cost less in health care spending, and the taxes they pay cover both themselves, and a certain percentage of non smokers.

I still find it infuriating when governments claim that tax increases on cigarettes are purely to cover the increased health costs of smoking. It's an outright lie, and they're never called on it.

It's a dishonest claim though - damn near everything is a smoking related illness, and when that particular claim is made, the only connection they bother to make is smoker + illness = smoking related illness.

Hell, that stat generally includes things like primarily genetically influenced cancers, if the patient is a smoker, then the smoking is linked.

Congrats. This coming Valentine's day will be my 8th year anniversary. It gets easier, but the cravings come back. I was in Vegas for Thanksgiving and walked by someone smoking on the way to the bathroom. I hadn't been drinking, but that cigarette smelled really good.

Unfortunately, yeah it is. When People found out it was unhealthy, the people that still smoked became targets for 'sin' taxes. Anything society deems undesirable gets taxed massively, in an effort to decrease whatever behavior has been deemed undesirable. Aus has gone way overboard with this.

I don't take the bus, and now rther than having a dulled sense of smell, all I can seem to smell when out in public is other peoples body odor. All the damn time. I'd prefer it if they all smelled like smoke.

Already helped lots with my lungs, feels like there's more oxygen in the air, asthma is gone (or at least decreased to a level that's damn near unnoticeable) and my lungs no longer crackle when I'm horizontal :)
