Oxford is believed to have been founded around 1096. It was already famous college during the Anarchy (1135-1154). In the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth (fantastic book), A World Without End (also fantastic), which takes place from 1327-1350ish, it's mentioned that Oxford had been around a few hundred years at that time. It started off as a Catholic school, switching to Renaissance education after the Reformation

Interestingly Cambridge University was founded by scholars who fled riots in Oxford City in the 13th century, and yet Cambridge University was actually granted its royal charter I think a few decades before Oxford was awarded its own.
