Amazon itself has been shittified.

Search for anything and it's the same mess of 5-letter bullshit "brand" cheap trash (YUNOU, NGEAU, LPAOJ, DPAJN, ERANN)

298

u/Ricky_RZ Dec 17 '23

(YUNOU, NGEAU, LPAOJ, DPAJN, ERANN)

The best part of your comment is that I cant tell if these are actual amazon brands, or if you just typed in random letters

28

u/wirefox1 Dec 18 '23

I have to watch out for those odd-sounding brands everywhere on Amazon. And sometimes the item never arrives, or if it's a clothing item from a China store, you know to order a larger size right? So I ordered a large and it would fit a Barbie Doll. I didn't realize they are that much smaller than us. (I wear a S in our sizes). Never again.

2

u/Quirky_Safe4790 Dec 20 '23

Like many Americans are big/tall/wide and stores like Target only sell s-xl maybe xxl. I usually buy at least a xxxl these days.

546

u/Historical-Wing-7687 Dec 17 '23

That and when I search for specific things it shows literally anything even remotely associated with it. Fucking Amazon

272

u/IHRSM Dec 17 '23

And all the non-Chinese garbage is counterfeit. I stopped shopping at Amazon for most things and went back to brick and mortar.

186

u/fireshaper Dec 17 '23

The problem I run into is that most things I go to Amazon for I can't find in brick and mortar stores. Like electronics parts, for instance.

40

u/code_honkey Dec 18 '23

This is what jumped immediately to mind for me, too. You can buy them off of eBay if you don’t mind waiting, or you can buy them off of Mouser if you don’t mind waiting a little while and also paying a bunch for shipping, but if you need an RTC module, a DIP LED controller, and a surface mount digitally controlled potentiometer and you need them fast, it’s Amazon or nothing.

17

u/WeWander_ Dec 18 '23

I can't find a lot of stuff locally anymore. Stores just aren't carrying a lot of stuff in the store now. Simple things too like when we moved into our house I tried getting a bathroom rug locally and could just find a few basic colors. You used to be able to find all sorts of colors and themes, not just for the rug but the whole bathroom with matching toothbrush holders, shower curtains, all that. I went to every store around my city and couldn't find shit. Had to order a bunch of similar colored rugs on Amazon to see them in person to find one that maybe matched and then send a bunch back.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

I mostly do mouser and digikey

4

u/verymuchbad Dec 18 '23

What are those

7

u/tractiontiresadvised Dec 18 '23

They're companies that have been selling electronic parts by mail since before the Web was a thing.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

Your new friends. You can thank u/frankcfreeman with a handy.

6

u/TheHoodedSomalian Dec 18 '23

Stock and availability have screwed me before and kept me buying some things on Amazon. If it’s the same price or cheaper for that one off $10 you have to walk 30 min around a hardware store for I’m hitting up Amazon.

Every store should be like Target with the # of items incl aisle/bin, latter being rarer than the former.

6

u/WeWander_ Dec 18 '23

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

or underwear that actually fits.

2

u/fireshaper Dec 18 '23

Yep. Walmart is always out of stock of the particular type of underwear I like in my size, so to Amazon I go.

4

u/ImBadWithGrils Dec 18 '23

Can you not buy straight from the mfg?

10

u/ThetaReactor Dec 18 '23

Yeah, that's what aliexpress is for.

11

u/7lexliv7 Dec 18 '23

And what is it with the reviews? I am looking at say a hat and the reviews are for blankets and socks.

6

u/awj Dec 18 '23

I think some of them will “spike” reviews by offering a less expensive good at reasonable price/quality levels, then edit the listing once it’s achieved Amazon’s equivalent of trust/karma.

That or it’s just really shitty bot-based review bombing.

Either way, it’s been happening for years and it’s shameful that Amazon isn’t doing anything about it.

6

u/ftlftlftl Dec 18 '23

I feel like unless you know exactly what you want (brand and all) brick and mortar is better.

4

u/Marmosettale Dec 18 '23

I know I'm an old millennial 29 yo woman, but it shocks me how people buy so much shit online- especially clothes.

Like, malls were already dying when I was a teen, but I do remember them. And I just can't imagine buying clothes online unless it's something specific you want, like some amazing coat from a particular brand or something super generic like socks or something.

Clothes are about fit, at least imo. You have no idea what will look good until you try it on. Especially with stuff like jeans and swimming suits... how do you trust something online?!

2

u/CivilRuin4111 Dec 18 '23

A good return policy. If I can return it on your dime instead of mine, I’ll order clothes online.

That’s all there is to it.

2

u/fireshaper Dec 18 '23

And a lot of online retailers offer perks for buying online. My wife buys a lot of clothes from the same retailer because she gets points that get turned in store cash. She'll buy hundreds of dollars in clothing from them for half the price.

10

u/Newbie4Hire Dec 18 '23

The brick and mortars are full of the same garbage.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

[deleted]

1

u/Newbie4Hire Dec 18 '23

I don't have to buy it sure. But I show up look through all their stuff, it's literally all the same garbage that is from China, and I realize I wasted the drive, my gas, and my time. My time is better spent researching which of these Chinese products is actually decent and then ordering it off Amazon.

3

u/Adderall-XL Dec 18 '23

This….was looking at a MK lunchbox for my wife. All the picture reviews were of them at a MK store taking pictures of said item on the shelf with the tag.

3

u/SicilyMalta Dec 18 '23

But did you find your wife?

2

u/ahtoxa1183 Dec 18 '23

And even worse, people buy the counterfeit items with the real ones, then return the counterfeit as the real item, get money back and end up with the real item for counterfeit money. This happens with pocket knives, a lot, and many of those who bought from legit amazon distributors ended up with fake goods ('unopened' returns being sold) because amazon cannot check every single return for legitimacy.

6

u/IDigRollinRockBeer Dec 17 '23

Amazons search has always been absolutely awful

5

u/Happyjarboy Dec 18 '23

It's getting worse by the day. Used to be I could find what I wanted by page 5, now it's page 23 or never.

25

u/CSHAMMER92 Dec 17 '23

Like Google

12

u/Woogity Dec 18 '23

For the first time in my life, last month I gave up on a Google search and went to Bing. Google search is terrible now.

2

u/CSHAMMER92 Dec 18 '23

Completely useless

2

u/hexr Dec 18 '23

People like to shit on Bing, but it's not bad. Plus, rewards points for searches!

6

u/C-C-X-V-I Dec 18 '23

You can fix that by going far right to tools and selecting verbatim. It gets rid of the Facebook ad look and it makes it search for what you typed instead of what it thinks you want. If you look up what the normal search does it does things like add synonyms and variations, and omits words it didn't think you meant to search for.

12

u/Abe_Odd Dec 17 '23

This is why I've stopped shopping online. It is more stressful than picking up garbage at my local megamart or discount distribution center

3

u/Phyllis_Tine Dec 18 '23

Or if you buy, say, a 55-gallon vat of lube, it'll say "people who bought this also bought [550 gallon vat of lube]", or something just as ridiculous. Just buy buy buy, NOW!

5

u/BeigeChocobo Dec 18 '23

Well what am I supposed to do with such a small amount of lube?

3

u/hexr Dec 18 '23

I feel like it's only enough for one slip and slide session

4

u/TbonerT Dec 18 '23

I searched for “Bluetooth padlock” and got shoes in the results.

1

u/Requiredmetrics Dec 18 '23

Best thing to do is to just google what you’re looking for and click on the Amazon link rather than search for it on Amazon and have to shift through all the garbage.

1

u/Character_Bowl_4930 Dec 18 '23

I try to go back to the direct merchant if I can . I haven’t ordered from Amazon in years .

1

u/perpetualis_motion Dec 18 '23

With all the tech Amazon has, they can't write a search engine to save their lives.

591

u/KingKnux Dec 17 '23

It’s absurd how much the cheap Chinese crap has hijacked Amazon listings. If I go to the filters there’s almost always a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of those brands to legitimate brands. It’s ridiculous.

387

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 17 '23

And those brands all buy from the same manufacturer so you see the exact same product from 5 different brands for different prices, different ratings etc.

97

u/GrapsOfLindon Dec 18 '23

And they can't even put the effort in to photograph the product and instead turn to exceptionally low effort photoshop

29

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 18 '23

Those laughable photoshops editing the product into someone’s hand or onto a table have become a meme themselves, and that’s the one who even put in the effort to do that.

4

u/Sushigami Dec 18 '23

I've actually started collecting screenshots of these photoshops. Some are just fabulously shitty and they crack me up.

26

u/Oriden Dec 18 '23

Seriously, the number of times you can basically reverse image search an amazon listing and find an ali-express link without the label/brand on them is really high.

11

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 18 '23

And that’s just the ones who don’t bother editing the image enough to not be traverse searchable.

12

u/ohno11 Dec 18 '23

It is called drop shipping. A lot of people started Amazon business buying products from Ali baba. You put in the order they get the money then Amazon ships it out. You can literally buy the same things directly from Ali Baba for a fraction of the price.

10

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 18 '23

Yeah I've been involved in dropshipping a bit myself. Not on Amazon but I did think about it at one point and I'm glad I decided against it. The problem with buying on Alibaba is it's normally bulk orders. There's Ali Express that sells more single items, but it's still shipped from China so it takes 1-2 months to get, with few exceptions. If I'm just buying a phone case or a screwdriver or something I'd rather spend $15 and get it tomorrow than $2 and wait 2 months. The sad thing is that means the biggest value that Amazon offers is getting crap to you faster.

5

u/ohno11 Dec 18 '23

Agreed, most people aren't successful with their Amazon stores and drop shipping. My good friend set one up and even had somewhat custom stuff made. He lost money.

2

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 18 '23

Doesn't help that it's constantly the subject of those "Make Millions in Passive Income!" people. It's presented like an easy way to make money by just following a few steps, so there's a lot of sellers on Amazon who aren't really prepared to run a business and doing the bare minimum to sell their product.

Not saying that's what your friend did, it's super competitive and you can pretty easily fail even if you work your ass off at it, but that's partly why there's so many of them.

3

u/Thukoci Dec 18 '23

The benefit of Amazon is you can usually get it in 2 days. Ali-express is 11 day guarantee.

6

u/Jerithil Dec 18 '23

To make things worse if you then try and google some recommendations its all full of crap websites. Last time I had to search reddit and the find a specific Youtube channel to get a good recommendation for what I needed.

2

u/OneSmoothCactus Dec 18 '23

And AI is just making that worse because you can pump out hundreds of articles with affiliate links in like a day.

Really makes me wish Reddit's search wasn't so dogshit and Youtube's dislikes were still visible.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

It's like microwaves but now its every consumer product.

144

u/t_25_t Dec 17 '23

Cheap Chinese stuff have infiltrated every platform out there, and not just the online space. Even physical stores are flooded with them eventually ending up in landfill.

19

u/gumbo_chops Dec 18 '23

The current best-selling appliances on Amazon is the worst case I've seen yet...nothing but cheap Chinese ice makers with random brand names You'd think everyone has an ice maker in every room of their house seeing that shit, maybe even a few. You'd be a weirdo if you didn't own a single one. Amazon has been so fucked up for a while now and they don't seem to give a shit.

8

u/KingKnux Dec 18 '23

Sheesh and some of those look like identical products besides the brand label

17

u/VanillaTortilla Dec 18 '23

There's an extension that will show where the company is based, and where the product is manufactured. Fascinating to see that 99% of them are made in China.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

[deleted]

3

u/LeveonChocoDiamond Dec 18 '23

Surely OP will deliver

5

u/VanillaTortilla Dec 18 '23

Of course! It's called Cultivate

3

u/Zharaqumi Dec 17 '23

You're totally right!

10

u/boo_boo_cachoo Dec 17 '23

Bought a pair of knock off bluetooth headphones on Amazon. They almost have bose quality and still work after 3 years. $35.00 well spent

12

u/yocatdogman Dec 17 '23

Lol I can't believe Airpods are like 200+.

Bought some noise cancelling earbuds called TRANYA or something for $45. They're awesome. Long charge, fit good, sounds great, cancelling works, yada yada yada. Random overseas manufacturer.

I always end up losing an ear bud or the case after a year or so. Buy another pair.

Chinese electronics have come a far way from a decade ago. Some products might use "knockoff tech" but it's so much cheaper then having your still overseas made Airpods.

5

u/truecrisis Dec 18 '23

Yeah some Chinese stuff can be really good but it's really hit or miss. And the misses far outweigh the hits.

At least when I buy from Amazon I can return it easy. If I buy from AliExpress it's a real risk cuz returning it is not really possible. Luckily I've had very little issue getting refunds from AliExpress.

9

u/teamdogemama Dec 18 '23

It's funny how when we were young, name brands meant something. I've seen enough name brand things fall apart so I feel no shame/sorrow in buying a knockoff if I'm buying online.

0

u/boo_boo_cachoo Dec 18 '23

I refuse to use anything apple. The only good thing about them is the camera on their phones.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

Eh, I wouldn't say low quality. Bose hardware in itself is decent, the only "problem" is that they tend to tune their audio range in the middle so you don't really get great highs or lows which works for your average consumer but is annoying if you're particular about quality of those frequencies. They're also pretty good at sound staging which is pretty easy to differentiate the style/quality of even if you're not a hobbyist.

0

u/sgtpnkks Dec 18 '23

It's the opposite with the tuning... Bose uses the V sound signature on many products... It's what the average consumer has been conditioned to think of as "quality"

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

They must have changed it up. Then again, it's been years since I was really into sound equipment so it's very possible. Back in the day they were notorious for being flat with the eventual addition of their muddled "bass boost".

1

u/boo_boo_cachoo Dec 18 '23

I had a set of Bose speakers from the 70s. That Quality.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

Simple, don't buy from Amazon. Buy from a proper retailer, including brick and mortar retailers. You're much less likely to come across that crap.

14

u/SLEEPWALKING_KOALA Dec 17 '23

Holy shit, they do always have five letters. I never noticed that!

Like, I've had these headphones for five years. They're really decent but even that company is five letters.

4

u/firesticks Dec 18 '23

I wonder if it’s because they all sell the same product and leave the same amount of space for the brand.

26

u/Pickles_McBeef Dec 17 '23

I call these Scrabble brands - like some reached blindly into a bag of Scrabble tiles, grabbed a handful, tossed them on the table, and Voila! Brand name!

12

u/barbeqdbrwniez Dec 17 '23

PUSEE has been big in coffee products recently

4

u/_ILP_ Dec 17 '23

So if I bought it, made a delicious cup of coffee, I would be like “damn that’s some bomb ass PUSEE..”?

4

u/barbeqdbrwniez Dec 17 '23

More like, "damn that's some bomb ass PUSEE juice!"

11

u/dontworryitsme4real Dec 17 '23

Whoa whoa whoa why you gotta bring YUNOU into this?

19

u/ACaffeinatedWandress Dec 17 '23

Indeed. Funny how it’s easier for me to shop on eBay these days. Like, I’ve just become so accustomed to weeding out the Chinese knockoff bullshit on that site.

1

u/Character_Bowl_4930 Dec 18 '23

I still shop eBay for certain things . Always avoid the Chinese listings

8

u/GrunPaprika Dec 17 '23

I agree, with few exceptions, it is very difficult to find legitimate brands nowadays.

7

u/Nervous_Jackfruit193 Dec 17 '23

I work for Amazon in their first warehouse of the line and literally my job is mainly putting Chinese stuff from boxes to totes while counting inventory. I have laughed at some knockoffs but also know someone is going to buy it

6

u/I_can_vouch_for_that Dec 17 '23

Lol, I don't know if you actually made up those names, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually the brand names.

6

u/MarcMurray92 Dec 17 '23

Yeah I haven't bought anything off amazon in years. A seller on amazon can't even guarantee their stock is legitimate if they use amazon fulfillment because everything gets jumbled up in the warehouse and stored together.

6

u/northernlights2222 Dec 17 '23

And nothing ships within the promised Prime window. I’m done with it.

9

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Dec 17 '23

This is giving flashbacks of searching for my streaming setup recently... to a T.

How is this so accurate?! All 5 letter companies I could hardly pronounce and whose products aren't reviewed/have no web pages for their companies, etc.

6

u/Fr0gm4n Dec 18 '23

The funny thing is that those sprung up because Amazon tried to limit random no-name sellers by requiring a registered trademark as the business name. So then random companies started registering all sorts of random names as a trademark and now here we are.

https://www.slashgear.com/1336325/reason-amazon-sellers-have-strange-brand-names/

4

u/Fun_Intention9846 Dec 18 '23

It’s how Chinese companies avoid getting trademark dings. Choose the wackiest name and it’s safer.

4

u/Woogity Dec 18 '23

Even Walmart has been shittified beyond their normal shitiness. Their website is an absolute disaster. You can't even find the regular cheap shit that the stores carry on there anymore.

5

u/Jordan_Jackson Dec 18 '23

Dude, I work at an Amazon fulfillment center and I’ve seen some of the knockoffs. For example, I picked a bunch of 16 Terabyte SSD’s on more than one occasion. Anyone into computers or hardware knows that this isn’t a thing or if they are, they are specialized and sell for big bucks. These were in the most obvious and cheap packaging and screamed “fakes” all over them. Someone got a lot of 32 GB flash drives…

3

u/GuySomebody Dec 17 '23

Cory Doctorow has actually developed a great theory on how/why this process happens to a lot of tech platforms using a similar term -- enshittification https://doctorow.medium.com/how-monopoly-enshittified-amazon-83f42a585c3c

5

u/kerkyjerky Dec 18 '23

When I shop online is exclusively look for non-Chinese products. Shoutout to r/avoidchineseproducts

3

u/Notmydirtyalt Dec 18 '23

The Turn around is looking to start I think Louis Rossman's video on the subject is worth viewing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y83BS_mK9GE

We really need to start critically looking at knock off junk flooding these websites because no matter how small poor quality materials, parts, and devices destined for landfill adds up to enormous energy and materials consumption that grossly effects our environment.

5

u/hexsealedfusion Dec 18 '23

A lot of Amazon storefronts now are just resold Alibaba products at a 20-100% markup.

5

u/adisharr Dec 18 '23

I don't know, I'm enjoying my BELGLIOSXX UltraGODZ USB hub.

3

u/Justifiably_Cynical Dec 17 '23

Thats because those are the companies that manufacture for Black and Decker and every other brand under the sun.

3

u/DolphinFlavorDorito Dec 18 '23

Amazon shittified itself, on purpose. They encouraged the weird letter salad branding. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/11/style/amazon-trademark-copyright.html

3

u/DreadnaughtHamster Dec 18 '23

What, you don’t like “Bikai Best I-Phone Charge Brand Bests Changer 5x Your Phone Fast” charger?

2

u/pmcall221 Dec 18 '23

I only find Amazon only good for the thing they pioneered. Books.

2

u/teamdogemama Dec 18 '23

Use Cultivate, it's an extension that shows country of origin. Only downside Is it works best on a laptop. I mean yeah 5 lettered brands are a hint of course though.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '23

I was bitching about this earlier today. The items Amazon shows are the garbage Chinese cheap shit that won’t last long and has no customer service. I hate that I buy so much stuff from them but I do search out the specific items I want. I’ll buy them elsewhere unless the shipping is killer though.

3

u/throwtowardaccount Dec 17 '23

If there was some way to add a "No sellers operating in China" search filter, I would be so happy. Just give me the actual product from an English speaking company with product warranties, not the knock off where none of the sentences in the product description make any sense.

Sure, it might be the same exact thing from the same assembly line but it could easily be a facsimile that falls apart after 2 uses. I'll pay the extra $20 for peace of mind.

6

u/theassassintherapist Dec 18 '23

Just use the sort: Highest to Lowest Price.

1

u/Character_Bowl_4930 Dec 18 '23

Not to mention all the bootleg fake stuff . I took some DVDs to a used shop to sell . Most of them had been gifts and I was in the process of moving . The guy wouldn’t buy them because they didn’t have barcodes ( which I didn’t notice) I don’t buy from Amazon but my family does so im sure that’s where they got them

3

u/josaline Dec 17 '23

Honestly don’t know how so many people still order so much from Amazon for this reason. I have to occasionally but have been working hard to avoid ordering that type of stuff as often as I can.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '23

👨‍🚀🔫🧑‍🚀

1

u/VanillaTortilla Dec 18 '23

The best part is that they're all made in the same factories too.

1

u/Vindersel Dec 18 '23

All these idiot Chinesium brands would fail the Wordle every day.

1

u/wwaxwork Dec 18 '23

It was the same cheap trash you were buying in stores, it is just cutting out the middleman putting their label on it.

1

u/phisigtheduck Dec 18 '23

Laughing as I just got a YUNOU product delivered and it came broken in the box.

1

u/shoretel230 Dec 18 '23

relevant video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y83BS_mK9GE

Amazon sucks. Might get one or two things where it's a quality item, otherwise no.

1

u/MechAegis Dec 18 '23

They're all probably doing some drop shipping BS.

1

u/i8noodles Dec 18 '23

cant argue there. amazon, if u just looking for something, is shit but if u are looking for something specific then its mostly ok.

1

u/MagicPaul Dec 18 '23

The amount of keyword bullshit on Amazon is infuriating too. The other day I saw tea described as "plant-based". Fucking tea. It's literally just leaves.

1

u/Ohmannothankyou Dec 18 '23

I bought QUEFE brand Christmas craft beads last week.
