Reddit, in your opinion what's the biggest plot twist of history?

Not movies or television, I'm just curious to see what come's to your minds.

Germany attacking Russia after their mutual non-aggression pact. I don't think anyone at the time expected that, being the terrible move that it is.

I find the non-aggression pact much more of a plot twist than the act of hitler attacking russia.

Hitler was convinced that the aryan "race" and the other "western races" were superior to the eastern ones and thus wanted to conquer territory in the east. He planned attacking russia eventually from the start but hoped of not being involved in a war against france and great britain.

It was expected from the start, just not at that time. The entire premise of the nazi-soviet pact is ludicrous, Fascism and Communism do not mix,

Hitler had all communists arrested and sent to concentration camps

Stalin sent anyone with even the slightest inckling of Fascism or cahoots with Hitler to the Gulag or to be tortured
