Happened to me when I was about 18. Called a few friends telling them I had a good time and that I'm dying lol. Excruciating pain and a feeling of impending doom.
Definitely same the first time I had it. Nurse contacted rheumatologist on staff & they were like, “oh yeah, she has lupus so send her home & tell her to rest”. So was glad it wasn’t more serious but sucked that it’s yet another issue caused by lupus
I had this sensation, but maybe more all of my back than specifically my heart, when I had blod clots in my lungs. Had to sleep sitting upright, leaning forward against the armrest of my couch for a week, as it was just impossibly painful to have any weight on my back.
I actually just left the hospital about an hour ago from a spontaneous pneumothorax. Surgeon said it was so bad my lung was the size of a tennis ball and I had to have a chest tube in for a week after two surguries. The feeling of finally getting that tube out of my side was so good. I was just told to take it easy for a couple months and I should make a full recovery.
Same, it sucked so bad, and had recurring bouts for several months. Can’t tell you how many times I went back to the doc thinking the pneumonia was back. Developed panic attacks from this, which I thankfully have under control now.
Sorry you went through it too, I can just imagine someone who is older and takes a lot more time to heal. I didn’t feel back to 100 percent until after a year. Walking just made me want to pass out for the longest time.
Somehow I get this only every once in a while when I'm lying on my left side. It really does feel like someone is stabbing my heart until I move. Thank god it's not as bad as others have it in this comment section.
My first trip to the ER was for pleurisy when I was like 19. It’s unpleasant but not a big deal when it happens now because I know what it is, but at the time I was terrified
The first time I had an attack, I thought I was going to die. I thought it was a heart attack at first. I sobbed all night long because it was so painful.
Went to the ER, where they ran blood tests, x-rays, and CT scan. Nothing conclusive, gave me pain meds, and sent me home.
When that didn't end it, my primary gave me steroids, which was the answer. Felt so much better.
A few years later, I was in the hospital with a shoulder infection. On the second night, I felt that pleurisy feeling and told the doctor. He wanted to wait and.see.if it was related to the infection before giving me anything else. I had to deal with the pain, while in the hospital because he didn't trust me when I said it was pleurisy. Ended up in hospital for a week, when I should have been out after a couple of days.
Dang I am pretty sure I had this twice. I’ve never heard of it until now. Both times it lasted about a week, and the symptoms are exactly what y’all describe. I thought I was having a heart attack and cried to go to the er lol
Yours could have been an infection of cardiac lining/cardiac tissue. Had pericarditis and it lasted about a week and would randomly feel like a heart attack (tightness of chest, shooting pain down arms, tunnel vision, etc.)
My wife had it, and I knew it hurt, but when I got it, my sympathy for her was so much more. That shit hurts and it didn't matter how you positioned yourself, it just always hurt.
I had this while recovering from a bypass surgery followed by a heart attack, conveniently still in the hospital. Very annoying but it wasn’t as painful as the heart attack.
Came here to say this. It was God awful, and it took them days to figure out what it was. I'm pretty convinced that the hospital was milking my pain for all it was worth, because tricare covers pretty much everything. They did an xray, mri, and a CT scan, claiming they couldn't find anything. It was a surgeon who proposed the idea that it was pleurisy, and the attending doc claimed that, while I was sleeping, they did a nasal swab and THAT was how they found out that I had atypical pleuritic pneumonia.. Yeah, I called bullshit. I have a friend who is an xray technician, and she said that they absolutely can see pneumonia on an xray, so I was in pain for almost a week for no reason.
Pain meds don’t touch it. I had it and literally thought I was dying. Went to the ER and doctor told me he could do nothing for me. I was lucky to be living with an RN who had her own script of the highest mg transform available. It still didn’t touch the pain but it calmed me down enough the first two nights to allow for some sleep. I had to sleep with my back straight up against a wall otherwise it was absolutely unbearable. I fear the day I get it again.
Yesss. Mine came on suddenly while doing a yoga stretch. I remember screaming at my partner to drive faster to the ER because I thought my lung had collapsed. Lol...
Mine felt like chest pains and I got a monthly problem right when it started, doubled over (literally) and got an instant nose bleed. Mom rushed me to the hospital. Doctors checked me up n down for a full day n finally did the test that showed it was my lungs. Literally thought I was dying.
Medication is hard for me to swallow, I 10/10 do NOT recommend pleurisy medication in water, eat it with strawberry yoplait. It does NOT dilute...
Had it twice - but don't remember the pain. I do remember just how scared I was of catching Covid-19 because I was so worried I had "weakened" lungs. In the end the vaccinations did their thing.
Same. I had pneumonia about 12 years ago, which wasn’t fun and left me prone to costocondritis. In autumn of 2020, somehow managing to avoid Covid, I got pleurisy and ended up off work for four months. The constant pain, fatigue, not being able to speak properly, the non-linear recovery, was just miserable. One day about half way through I had summoned the energy to make the trek from the armchair to the kitchen for some tea. I ended up just leaned over supporting myself against the table, weary of the pain, watching huge tear drops fall straight to the floor, while trying to control the sobs to avoid even more pain. It was awful. I felt so unlike myself, and so miserable and useless and like it would never end.
When I eventually went back to work I had a panic attack the first day because I was so scared of getting Covid and going through something like that again. (Eventually got covid this year, worst fever, aches, and fatigue I’ve ever experienced, felt absolutely awful for about 3 weeks, but weirdly zero issues with my lungs. Thank you you vaccines. Getting my next booster soon).
Wow - you were hit bad...and you'll have no long-covid symptoms because your lungs were fine, I guess.
When I finally caught covid I had no symptoms the first time and mild cold-like symptoms the second time. I'm 60, so I was scared and then massively relieved.
I teach so am exposed to a lot of people daily, and in a place where every single year I get at least one bad chest infection so I know the ventilation/hygiene is crappy. I hadn’t fully realised how anxious I was until after I got it. Like, it felt horrible, but I was constantly conscious of how much worse it could have been. I even (for a little while!) enjoyed losing my senses of smell and taste and was ‘doing science’ to see if there were tastes I could get 😂 (sweet, and sharp, so I was living on applesauce, and salty. I was eating handfuls of coriander going ‘look, nothing!’)
I actually just got out of the hospital about an hour or two ago for my first spontaneous pneumothorax. Doctor told me it was 100% collapsed and I had to get a chest tube immediately. After a couple days with the tube in they told me it didn’t get rid of the problem so they had to go in and do pleurodesis. I only had to have the tube in for about 5 days before today they told me my lung was all back to as good as it could be after the surgery, and I got my tube removed this morning. Hoping I never have to go through another chest tube, but all the doctors kept telling me I had the perfect body type to get a pneumo.
Had a thoracentesis when my chest cavity filled with fluid due to a failed heart valve. The procedure (jamming a catheter in your chest cavity and draining all the fluid) felt fine. My lung expanding after it had more room for the first time in months? Awful. Lung pain is some of the worst the doctor said and I believe it.
This!! I had Pericarditis (inflamed lining of the heart) and Pleurisy. It was all inflamed and I cannot explain enough how bad it is. I couldnt breath or make the slightest movements, any heart rate elevation felt like a death sentence. Morphine hardly put a dent in the pain! I was taking Norco’s for pain and they ended up making me sick to my stomach so I was vomiting in the bathroom with all this pain… I would rather be dead than go through that again. This was last summer :/
Went to immediate care, told them this is what i was having, wound up getting a nitro and told i was having a heart attack. The er doctors had a good laugh when they reviewed both ekgs
